Engine wont stop!?

So i had a call this morning from the guy who bought my .:R32 (still miss that car )

When he bought it he didnt have a license for one reason and another and so it sat at his with him starting it up weekly until he was allowed to drive again.

When it came to it, he went to the car and the battery was flat, bumped it and took it off for a quieter exhaust (i gave him the standard zorst and milly resonated in case the non res was too loud) and a new battery.

Now when he starts the car it wont switch off! 

He can completely remove the key from the ignition and the car is still running happily, to kill the engine he has to stall it.... so obviously something here is not right.

The car was flawless when she was mine so the battery drain im confident didnt come from the car more likely from the start up each week without actually running the car out on the road to achieve charge, but the failure to switch off is something ive not even heard of before

naturally he's concerned so called me, purely for advice and to see if i could shed some light on it, ive said a visit to VW sounds like a plan with a view to getting the car plugged in

he's a really nice chap and said i'd try and find out what the fault could be, anyone got any ideas?

the battery that went in to replace the dead one was identical too by the way

I would suggest getting any codes read or visiting a VAG specialist rather than a main dealer but other than that nothing more to add VC.

Thats an odd one. First thought are dodgy ignition barrel... but then if the key is removed wouldn't the immobiliser cut the engine?

Is he near anyone with VCDS?

see thats what i thought, dodgy ignition but again the immobiliser should kill the engine

if it had no immobiliser it could even be a slight amount of overfueling but that wouldnt keep it running just delay shut down

My sis just had summit like this on her corsa and it was part of the ignition barrel snapped off? Tell him to take it apart and look mate as a precaution!

I would suggest getting any codes read or visiting a VAG specialist rather than a main dealer but other than that nothing more to add VC.

snapped off as in wear and tear? how old or what sort have miles has the corsa done? just thinking that the .:R was very low mileaged and so the amount of wear couldnt be that great i wouldnt have thought, interesting though

Corsa has done 55k and is a 52reg. Its a case of wear and tear and probs just bad luck

It was a weird shaped spline coming off the end of the barrel that had snapped off some of its shape allowing the car to start but not turn off, then too not start or turn off.

It baffled me but that's wat it was

cheers for that, i'll put it onto the suspect list then, the .:R had only just done about 20k iirc sound shouldnt be that but sounds like it could be from your explanation especially if noting shows up when its plugged in

i dont but i can ask him when i speak to him next, what would cause contacts to fuse like that anyway, heat?

My second thought is immobiliser but if the car is still running the immobiliser thinks the keys in the ignition surely? I

The more I've read of this thread I would start with ignition barrel cause it's free then tell him to go from there

Chap I used to work with had this problem on his A3. He's not overly technical, so all I know is that it was put down to "an electrical fault" and a few bits replaced under warranty. His Audi was a total pup from an electrical perspective, dash losing illumination at night intermittently, etc.

Yeah if the stater relay arced on startup it can cause the contact to weld together, Very rare but still a possible cause.
