Can anyone confirm, when you double click your home button on the iPhone you see other apps that are "active". It seems to me that when you close an app it doesn't close fully until you take it out of this bar, do these apps that are still "active" actually use data whilst they are not in use?

This is multi tasking that allows switching between apps.

A useful feature of being jail broken is being able to "kill" all background activity with one shortcut

I must admit, since I got the iphone 4s my cellular data usage has gone through the roof. o2 shop said my average usage was less than 100mb a month with my iphone 3gs. Within a week of owning the iphone 4s I went through 70mb, and didnt do everything different to normal. I've had to turn off cellular data until I get my usage changed at the next billing date to save me getting a ridiculous bill off them.
I miss the jailbreak to change the overall look and sounds on the phone, wish I hadnt upgraded to be honest

Have a look at this for understanding multitasking: http://speirs.org/blog/2012/1/2/misconceptions-about-ios-multitasking.html

In short, apps are active for a short time afterwards but are ultimately closed. Double hitting the home button shows most recently used apps, rather than active apps.
