Real world 0-60 with data plot
« on: January 08, 2012, 02:46:09 pm »
7.910 seconds. I thought it would be interesting to log the 0-60 in the real world of my car, in real conditions driving with mechanical sympathy. I used a highly accurate in car data logger to record the true speed, not the speedo dial, and then logging software to analyse the data. i.e. there is no human error of clicking a stopwatch or trying to mark a position on the road. Below is the graph plot.

I'm personally not into traffic light grand prixs so launched the car with traction control on at just below 2000 rpm, it was not violent. I changed gears quickly but not slamming them. I got a little bit of wheel spin whilst the traction control tried to sort things out. Also I am not an expert in launching a car.

I changed gears just before the redline and no limiter kicked in. No doubt if I revved higher, fed the clutch in better, then redlined, slammed it into 2nd gear and held it to 60 on the limiter in 2nd then the time would have been faster and closer to the factory tests (where they have spare clutches and running gear  ).

You can see by the flat parts on the curve where I change gear and how long it takes.

My car is completely standard.

So in other words I drove it probably like most real world drivers would unless they are trying to thrash the car. It still felt nippy to me. Great all round car the GTI, the last VW I had was a Scirocco Scala in 1994 and loved it. I'm pretty new to the GTI and this forum, it seems a great place.  I'll stick 50-70 in gear (3rd and 5th) logs up shortly as well.  :happy2:

Via the racelogic if i remember correctly i recorded times of 5.6 seconds in my stage 2+ gti and 5.6 in my stage 2 + edition 30 all though the eddy had unbranded tyres ! When i put the 888 on the edition 30 i went to a 4.9 0-60 which was repeatable but i could never get a 5.6 again in the gti, i reccon with 888s on the gti would knock another .3 seconds of the 0-60 time
MK5 EDITION 30 - CW - REVO S2+ - GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

from what I've read, vw were very conservative with their performance figures for the GTI.  Evo mag timed a manual standard gti at 6.5 secs a fair few times on tests, autocar did a 6.5 on what they said were finished tyres and expected to knock a couple of tenths off with new tyres.  I'd suspect a stage 1 gti to be 6secs give or take a tenth, mine is a different beast compared to standard.

I've not tried in a GTI, but managed 6.5s in a Clio 182 (~158bhp/ton) and 4.3s in another car (~300bhp/ton), both with a V-box. I suspect on the road a stock GTI would be dead level with the Clio, as the Clio has really impressive traction which is further helped by easily modulated NA engine.

It's quite surprising the variation the slightest error and the quality of road surface, can make.

 :signLOL: she did toot me.

I hate thrashing a car, especially from a standing start, so that is probably half the reason, the other half is probably lack of talent. In gear it still felt a fairly brisk pace.

I did consecutive 5.1's to 60 mph with the Racelogic Performance Box. Not the best tyres, dry surface, traction control off, set off from idle in sport mode. With semi-slicks I reckon a sub 5 second sprint to 60mph is easily done and easily repeated. Mine is a 6R Polo GTI on stage 2 Revo, so not incomparable with those pesky ED 30's.
Golf R gone.
