Rear brake binding - GTTDI
« on: January 13, 2012, 10:38:17 pm »
So the car went in for an MOT at Kwik Fit. Normally I wouldn't go near these guys but the offer of a £25 MOT roped me in. I didn't think there would be any probs with it passing.

An hour in and I got the call that the rear offside brake was binding. The mechanic said that the caliper, disc and pad would need replaced, at a cost of £525! Hasty reminder why I don't use Kwik fit for anything!

I took the car back and will get it fixed elsewhere. What are folks thoughts on the quote from Kwik fit? I'm not to clued up on mechanics but seems excessive? What would I look to be paying?

Cheers

While if they are using gen parts that's still to much, pads, discs and caliper at our place would be about £180 +vat

It's worth seeing of you can fix it first without replacing parts even if it works long enough just to get it through its MOT.

My last car had exactly the same problem. I purchased a caliper rewind tool or about £18 and wound back and cleaned up the caliber. I sprayed some WD40 (with pads well out the way) around the piston to try and get a bit of lubrication round it.

Put the caliper back on the disc and pressed the brakes slightly to pump the piston out to its normal position then wound back again. I did this a few times and it did the trick. No more binding.

It will depend how bad the caliper is though but it's worth a shot.

iPhone keeps changing caliper to caliber, argh!

Thanks guys appreciate the feedback. Got the car to a mechanic mate last night for him to look at this morning. He did mention a clean up so fingers crossed he can do enough to get it through. Will keep you posted cheers!
