Replacement window glass
« on: January 19, 2012, 09:58:25 pm »
I have just spent a while reading up on tinting of windows and it seems that the tints don't quite sit right over the matrix dots and leave a white band around. Seems like the only option is to replace the windows themselves to get it done right.

Does anybody know where to find a good VW breaker on the off chance they may have some factory privacy glass replacements? Or failing that, a place to get them at a reasonable price?

Go to a few window tinting specialists and get some quotes. Ask them that you'd like them to sand or glue the dots for an OEM look. Film tinted windows CAN be done to look right.

But it is exceedingly difficult on the Mk5 rear screen - due to the aggressive bending of the glass on both horizontal and vertical planes.  If your insurance xs is only £50, get an independent windscreen fitter to fit a genuine rear tint, and then if you have a five door, do the rear sides yourself with oem tints.

Shouldn't have thought they would  replace the window even if there is nothing wrong with it?

This is true, though an experienced film installer will have no problems with it. If they leave overhang at the bottom whilst shrinking, they will be able to 'lift and pull' over the bottom corners.

Il be getting mine done in the new few months, and il be getting them to get the dot-matrix lines covered, OEM style. Might cost a bit more, but well worth it i think.

Il get some pics when done.

Cheers.

There was something wrong with it - there was a big score/scratch in it - happened whilst parked at the supermarket!

Hahahahahaha, I like the way your mind works.

Wish I could take the severe scratches I got on the windscreen and put them on the rear screen.
