Easiest way to remove silicon from plastic trim?
« on: April 24, 2009, 08:21:33 pm »
As the title says really chaps, skirts and everything are covered in it and I want them colour coding and if it happens at it is, there's going to be big trouble in a year or two.

Many thanks,

Luke

Petrol, carb cleaner or brake cleaner should get it all off.

Hi Luke,

You may need to look at getting a dedicated plastic cleanser such as the ones used in paint bodyshops, as this will open up the pores in the plastic to remove all traces of silicone... it's a bit like spirit wipe, but for plastic.

Let us know if you need some as we may have a bit lying around that we can send to you

B&H Silver :)

I know they sound crude but they do get the silicon off.  Remember this is on plastic thats about to be painted, not actual paintwork!  Most of the lower end of the polishes and degreasing products contain petrol and noone complains.  I've used these in the past when smoothing side strips, rear valances, etc and no paint ever peeled off.  The dealers I've worked at in the past used brake cleaner to get rid of the sticky stuff and polish residue when sticking on new number plates...it works a treat.
