Winter tyres - What do you use?
« on: February 01, 2012, 09:14:12 am »
Just wondering for those who use them what you are running and what do you think of them? I am currently on Dunlop SP winter 3d's which got pretty good reviews. But after having them on a few months now I feel they aren't as good as I'd hoped. Cornering grip is pretty good. Never have an issue. Straight line grip is horrendous though. Just pulling out of a junction or trying to pull away with any sort of right foot it just spins. 1st and 2nd in the dry plus 3rd in the wet or damp conditions. Been considering trying something different.

It's not really been cold enough yet for winter tyres to be honest.

I know its been unusually warm this year. I got them due to struggling the last 2 years but now I have them we haven't had even a sprinkle. I also didn't want the nasty salt to attack my nice Charlestons either so that's why I have my winters on. It is also currently around -1 here aswell.

I have Kumho KW27's fitted, can't say we've had any snow yet to really test them, improved grip on frosty/icy roads but terrible straight-line traction in the wet (sometimes manage 4th gear wheelspin!)

Kumho KW27s here and I agree with the comments above.

Probably not worth the bother on balance for this, so far, mild winter.

Same.  Its probably been a bit colder up in north east scotland but still not exactly seasonal.  I have no issues with traction or cornering whatsoever with these tyres.   When its cold they are a deffinite improvement on the summer tyres.  There is a slightly vauger feeling to the steering which I think it common to all winter tyres but otherwise they are superb, especially for the money.

Performed very well in the 1/2 day of snow we did have too...

Nokian WR, nothing else comes close.

Got them on both cars, feel very good - but to be fair, I haven't tried anything else to compare.  That said I would happily buy same make again

My Goodyear Vector 4seasons arrived yesterday. I'll get them fitted this weekend.

Just in time for the cold spell thats supposed to be coming!

Off to Edinburgh for a week on the 11th & the place we're stopping at has already had snow, so they'll be getting a good test then!
