Am I mad? Starting too look at 911s! (996) as my next car
« on: February 05, 2012, 03:04:52 pm »
Hey all
I was sitting watching "No Mans Land" on DVD last night and lusting over the 80s 911s on show , and in my slightly inebriated state went onto the Autotrader app on my phone. Curious to see how much a nice looking older 911 was , I got a shock when I realised a nice 996 with about 80K on the clock can be had for £14K. Am I slighty deluded in thinking I could seriously run one of these as a daily driver for around the same budget as a GTI? Ive always promised myself that I would have one before I was 50! Any websites or buyers guides I should look at , or has anyone ran one of thse as a ten year old used car? Theres still a few years untill I change cars but I would like to read up on possible pitfalls , just to see if I need to give myself a bloody shake!!  :signLOL:

They are cheap now, but running costs are definately alot higher than te gti.

Think most 911 owners budget at least £2000 a year for services and repairs. The have a tendancy to start leaking cooling fluid and oil aswell.

I love 911's but would never consider one as a daily driver. Sorry for stamping on your hopes a little bit there.

No idea on the running costs but I'd assume a lot! I've found myself thinking the same as they have really come down in price... I love the shape of the 996 C4S! :happy2:

Yes , thats what my sensible head is saying too! However , I do roughly 7000 miles a year and my commute to work is 2 miles each way , so would be better off being done on a bike anyway , I know about a few of the problems , engine failures on early 996 cars have been known too , however , I'm still tempted! Having said that , my mind will probably change a thousand times by the time I am ready to change out of the GTI! (only had it 18 months and in no great hurry to change)

something else to factor in is, the 911 will be 20+ yrs old and although very nice to look at, will need classic car type care, which will involve replacing parts through old age, whereas your GTI is still newish and wont suffer from the same problems

I know a bloke near me who bought a 911 turbo and he doesnt use it, because of the cost when something goes wrong

Again , another thing that I have thought about , however I will be looking at the 996 and I wont be changing cars for approx 3 years so I will be looking at around a ten year old 911 , which by then , will be the same age as my GTI.

Two of my mates are running 996 turbos. Occasionally they have little niggles but nothing serious so far. Both are running over 600hp now too. Bloody quick with just a map aswell

Almost bought a c4s last year that had had new engine and intercoolers  but at the last min pulled out of buying it. They are stunning to drive and I will get one at some point

Mods yes but way too many to stick in this little box

To be honest I've been through the old invoices for this one and annual services have been as low as £250 at a Porsche specialist. This ones had tyres and brakes all round so no nasty surprises around the corner!  :happy2:

I had one for nearly six years . I only sold it last march when I was made redundant as driving to dole office in a 911 didn't look great . I bought a gti while I was jobless and still have it . ( have job now too ) .

Loved it . Tax is cheaper than a gti . Insurance was cheaper than a gti . To be honest they are not that much more expensive than gti's. Everyone should own a 911 at least once . Over six years I had the usuall things to replace , clutch , discs and pads , rear tyres every year . Other than that pretty good . I had the sport exhaust fitted , that thing was awesome , sounded like a bat out of hell and it was switchable also In case I wanted a silent getaway .

You can ask me any questions on 996 carreras .

C4s is normally aspirated, so wouldn't have intercoolers
