Black alloys whats everyones opinion?
« on: April 29, 2009, 10:06:59 pm »
Just wanted to know what everyones opinions on black rims are
do they look good?
are they a pain in the ass to keep clean?
and do they look good with a reflex silver golf?
also the wheel cap nut covers has anyone sprayed them a different colour or can you get ones with vw signs on them :ashamed:
cheers golfman.

....

Most black alloys look dreadfully common and in fact have literally become dreadfully common and especially on white cars.

Unless they have stainless/polished/coloured rims they do absolutely nothing for me. Their blackness usually hides the form of the wheel and they can look like utility black steel wheels. Furthermore, they do nothing to show off a low profile tyre.

Some black alloys look okay and some don't. Things like Pro Race 1.2s look fine in black and keep the motorsport theme they come from.
I adore the Euro ED30 monzas in matt black and I also think the Leon Cupra's optional black alloys look really good on it.

So basically as ever you need to carefully match up the style of wheel to the car and then factor in the colour. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Just like painting your walls in the house. You can see a lovely shade of blue in someone else's house, splatter it on your own walls and it can look awful.

So I'm sort of half a fan of black wheels, and half of my car stable has black wheels too!!! On top of that I keep thinking about getting my 17inch Monzas painted black for winter use.
Oh, and to answer the other question, black rims are just as big a PITA to keep clean as silver or white or whatever colour ones. I've got black rims on my Ibiza and they are as bad as my Golf's BBS to keep looking clean and tidy.

....Agreed and very well put.

My previous post was certainly a more general and sweeping comment.

personally i dont like them in general but then  i see a car like greenouse's with them monzas
and think yep yep yep!
so as already said it comes down to the individual car and how it all fits together!
not that any of that helps you lol

I think it's a very personal opinion, as are most wheels.

I love my gloss black pescaras on my silver car, but in saying its a personal opinion, I don't like what Robin has done to his Monza's as I think it takes the edge away from them and makes them look cheaper than they are in reality.

So yes, I think it's really up to you to make the decision.

....For me, your black Pescara's would be transformed if they had a silver rim and would particularly suit the car being silver. (Like Hurdy's?)

Do you remember what my stock Monza's were like with white worm? Here's a reminder : -

I let my white worm go for longer than anyone else here has and so mine was a good example for others to see how the dreaded worm progresses. What was I to do? Refurb every year or so while bearing the scars until it was extensive enough to do? Refurb as soon as any white worm started to appear? Change to a different wheel? - No, I like the Monza's far too much and they are very easy to clean - I don't like to spend half my life cleaning and detailing - What's the point? This is England not California.

My solution was to retain the Monza as it is one of the defining elements of the Mk5 GTI - Just as the Pescara is to the Ed30 - You painted yours, I painted mine - It is as you say a choice of personal taste.

As Dolly Parton once said : -

"It costs a lot of money to look this cheap!"

To keep things in perspective, yes Black wheels have become more popular but will never be as common as Silver wheels!

The other thing to consider is, having a rim/lip in a contrasting colour can give the illusion on some wheels that the actual wheels are smaller than they are. One (Black/Anthractite etc) colour does not tend to give this illusion.  :happy2:

Black wheels FTW!  :jumpmove:

:happy2: Exactly that.  :signIWS: (Obviously not calling you stupid, but there's no sign that says "Yeah that" or "I agree with him" ) :jumping:

....I used the term "common" in the sense of showing a lack of taste or refinement, not numerically. I think a lot of people have black wheels just because others do and it's fashionable.

Personally I like some but not many, black wheels and it does depend on the overall package. Looks very good on yours for example.

But it is of course down to each individual and even though I might express my own opinions quite strongly, I do respect others.

Whammy!

I think satin/matte looks better than gloss in most cases. On a silver car they work well, although so do steel grey ones.

Sideways yo!
