oh good..... rust on my wings :|
« on: March 05, 2012, 08:30:51 pm »
Well similar to wany people I wash washing and waxing my car and I've noticed small beads of rust on the top of the arch.  At first I didnt know it was a common problem until I went to a body shop at home and they told me I'd be best to have the wings replaced and the car sprayed at a cost of £745.  He said he could try and rectify the wings at £490 but couldnt put any garuntee on the work.

I just wondered what other people have done regarding this?  I know some people have managed to get the work out of VW, however I didnt buy the car brand new and I had a 6 month waranty but that's now expired.  Although I've read something about a 12 year garuntee on their body's.  Wasnt sure where I stood with this or what anyone else has done to sort it out?

Many thanks!

You have a valid warranty claim as long as your wings haven't had a previous repair done. Get in contact with your nearest local dealer.

I'm going to spend some time tonight reading that thread. Out of interest do you know many people who've had success with this? As I say I've not standard warranty left on the car so not sure what I could claim against?

Many thanks!

Noticed this a few weeks ago when I had the car on my mates new lift, just caught a glimpse of the bubbling. Had to put a new rivet in the siren case and whilst down noticed that it was going rusty on the inside, both sides

Is the rust warranty no quibble? Or do you need full VW history? My car is a November 2005 and hasn't been in the dealer for three years since they smashed my windscreen doing routine work in the engine bay...
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.

I'm pretty sure aslong as your wings are original with original paint you will have a case with VW. Also if there is no other damage around the affected area. Fingers crossed for you mate

My car has no rust on the wings ..yet . how would i go about removing the inner arch ? thinking of a major clean and then some wax oil . has anyone else done this as a precaution?

Well I was at my usual local dealer on Saturday picking up parts and asked about getting an appointment for a paint inspection - was told I could get one at the end of July!

Got in touch with another dealer who told me to pop in whenever, so I did today as I was passing. Turns out I should've made an appointment as the fella was rushed off his feet, but he kindly did the inspection anyway and will forward the pics and report onto VW. I'll be going there from now on.

Hoping I get a repair as it's getting bubbly very quickly now.

Sorry to hear John.

If it's any cancellation it seems to be more common than any of us would like it to be on the MK5 GTI. Under and partially on my near side rear wheel arch I've got a patch of corroded bubbly paint about half an inch long which will need sorting. Plan to do force my local dealer to address it in the summer before the 7 year paint/corrosion warranty will be up  :scared:

IMO having seen a few rusty MK5's now, it is a inherent design fault.  The inner wings are not secured well enough, and chafe at the inside of the wing and the wing lip, when allied with road debris (grit, salt etc) it creates fret juice (effectively a grinding paste) it eventually wears through, and corrosion forms, which spreads unchecked.

If you do get the corrosion sorted, make sure you sort out the inner wings, perhaps by trimming, or better securing, or eventually it will reappear.

Just my opinion.

I haven't noticed any of this yet. Hopefully prevention is better than cure. How can I achieve better securing?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
