Ventilation system failure help...?!?!
« on: March 20, 2012, 08:48:30 pm »
Started the car tonight and I hear a loud thumping / vibration sound coming from the far left of the dash.

From outside the car, with the bonnet up it sounds like an electric compressor constantly running..????

The sound speeds and decreases when the fan speed is altered.

The air vent do not pump any air out..???

I'll have a deeper look into it later in the week, but it would be handy if anyone knew what this was.

It was completely fine before turning off.

Weird...?!?!?!

I don't know how easy it is to do, but if I were you I'd examine your air blower fan which should be located behind the glovebox. Sounds to me like something's went wrong with the fan

Yes your right it is the air blower for sure...!!!

It just rumbles and shakes the sh*t out the dash. Never in 10 years of working on car electronics have I seen something like this. Really interested to find out what it is but way to busy at the shop to look into it...!!!!

Well after removing the glove box and having a snout about it turns out that on the non climatronic models the re-circ flap for the interior is not present nor the motor.

This means in re-circ it is louder in the cabin plus exposed a little if anything falls through the back of the glove box. Mainly the slot where the handbook goes.

So I see the fan and half is missing, I remove the cabin filter and a broken biro falls out along with half the main fan blades.....!!!

So it's obvious now what the noise and cause was.

Pics below.....!!!!
Fan is £102+vat .....! Can't buy separate from motor. :-(
