Trolley jack and axle stands...

Hi all

looking to buy a set of axle stands and replace the ANCIENT trolley jack my dads had in the shed since the 60's and was wondering if:

that would do the trick or if i should invest in something more substantial?

it'll mainly be used for doing light maintenance work...

i've purchased another used 3tonne halfrauds jack too and another pair of used 'simple' jack stands, (looking to set it up such that i can get it up on all 4 corners if i needed to - car would of course be supported underneath by copious amounts of lumber that we've got lying around.lol

what would people recommend?

in the summer i'm looking to be removing the intercooler piping etc so would be spending some time under the car....

If u got a mk5 just the jack in the boot trust me and get some black 2 ton axle stands from halfords for like 23 pound
Use a trolley jack and for bricks for backup also i wouldnt advice using all 4 axle stands might get abit nasty

I would not advise using the scissor jack (aka the widowmaker) that VW give you with the car. Have heard a lot of stories about them failing for different reasons.
The one you linked looks fine for the job, I got mine about 2 years ago from Aldi for £20 with the stands included.
Have you tried Halfords as they have decent offers on the jacks.

The only time i would ever use a factory jack is if i'm caught out on the road, trolley jack everytime!

Before you but that I would check the closed height to make sure it will go under the sill, nothing more annoying than having to use the car jack to jack the car up to get a trolley jack under.

But they are well renowned for being unstable.  I guess at a push ok to lift the car on to a stand but you certainly don't want to be getting under the car with it up on one of those.

Fecking despise them things since one gave up on life with my car in the air...

The car landed with the sill on the axle stand I was about to slide under the car.   The sill was taking the weight and left a dint where it landed on the axle stand

i use the supplied scissor jack as it doesn't hurt the sills

I keep an ice hockey puck in the boot with a groove ground into it. I put this between the high lift jack and my sill. Works fine for me.

I bought this trolley jack from machine mart and did the 'S3 jacking points' mod to make life easy for changing the wheels.  Just squeezes under the sills and is easy to use.  Mine is on standard suspension, so not sure if it would be too high for a car that's been lowered.

You'll end up polishing this one though
