Climate control advice...
« on: April 07, 2012, 05:59:55 pm »
Hi guys i am new to this forum and would like to introduce myself and say hi and thanks for any help I may receive in the future. My car is a 58 plate Black GtI with 30k on the clock I have had it for about 6 months and bought it from VW in Shrewsbury... Having owned my last golf a MK4 GTI PD 150 diesel for the best part of ten years I thought it was about time for a change... to a petrol as well... so I started looking for a nice MK5 GTI to have a test drive in and found one in a dealer with most of the bits I wanted on and ended up buying it... so far so good but when we had a bit of warm weather i noticed that the aircon wasn't working...  it was 20 deg outside and all the relevant lights were on but no cold air... Finally got round to taking round my friends garage who has a Robinair aircon unit as he does a bit of re-gassing in his spare time and has always looked after and serviced the aircon on my MK4. Did all the usual to it and added the correct amount of oil and gas but when we tried to fire it up it seemed to take an age for the system to actually start to work, although when it did it was pulling down to 3.5 deg via a probe in the vent... seemed pretty good then it seemed to turn itself off and blow normal temp air... now climate being climate and it being a tad chilly today could it be the fact that is drawing in cold air anyway and sensing it and turning off the system... or could there be another problem as i thought when you selected "low" on the temp setting it should just blow cold .... or do i have another issue... cheers.

The air con compressors are known to fail but if yours went down to 3.5 deg that seems ok. If the outside air temp is below 5 deg I believe the compressor shuts down.

Hi there, Yes 3.5 to 4.0 deg then all of a sudden the compressor shut down... also noticed that the rad fans shut down as well... but I think that is correct. Am I right in thinking if you turn the temp right down to "low" the A/C should just run whatever the temp inside...  to be honest I cant remember if it was below 5 deg but I think it was a tad warmer than 5 deg today... do the MK5 suffer with any other issues with control panels or sensors.... it's just that it is under warranty so if it needs controls or anything it can go back.. Maybe have to wait for the warmer weather to return...

The rad fans will run on their slow speed all the time the compressor is on. On "low" you should always feel cold air but I've noticed that it never gets as cold as my previous BMW, even after a gas recharge. I would test it as thoroughly as poss as replacement compressors are expensive..... £1200.
