Fitting MF buttons advice

I have just bought some MF buttons and wanted to ask for some advice before I start,  My car is a 58 plate gti with paddle change. I get the jist on fitting the buttons but not sure what the box that came with them is for... will I already have this in the steering wheel as I have got the paddles or will I have to swap them and use the one that came with the buttons. couple of pics of what I have got but not had the airbag out yet. any advice would be appreciated.

When I fitted mine (on a 56 Plate) a box was already in the steering wheel. I left the original one in there and just plugged the buttons in. Everything work :happy2:ed perfectly. Easy peesy!

I did this to mine, if I were you I would swap over the the control box, just make sure that it is a later HW version.

Ah right i think I am getting with it now... forgive me as i am getting on a bit 
 
Looking at the differences It looks like I have the pre07 buttons, Just been out to the car and checked the colour the centre is probably slightly darker than the buttons but I can live with that as it is pretty close.

looking at the picture below I assume the paddles plug into the little white socket next to the ribbon plug... then the other end of the ribbon goes into the black box and that plugs into the car/ can-bus ... correct ?

Thanks guys.. Just another question... I have the RCD510 head unit fitted what sort of functions should I be able to do from the steering wheel when the buttons are fitted.. or does it depend on what Can version I have ?

I too have just fitted these buttons to my 07 ed30. Finally being brave enough i tackled the airbag and everything went smoothly. I changed the small box connector to the one that came with my buttons, the only think i would say is to make sure you place the button ribbon in the groove's to ensure you dont catch it when you refit the airbag.

The functions i have with the buttons are Mute, and volume control, i did expect to be able to change tracks etc.. but this doesnt appear to be the case.

I think it depends if you have a Highline or Midline dash. May be wrong on that.

I fitted it to mine which has highline. If you scroll through the menus using the menu button, as long as you leave it on the audio screen, you have full functionality. You can skip, forward tracks etc

I must have a problem then, as when left in audio screen and press the up/down arrow on the right hand side they do nothing. Maybe i need some coding done?

Hmmm we've gone well past my technical knowledge now lol.

Seems strange as my car is a touch older. My car has a factory MFD2 fitted, maybe that has something to do with it? (scratching my head)

I don't have hi line just the std display, also fitted the RCD510 myself as the car came with the std head unit which looked and sounded naf..  I think it will be a see what works job... as long as I get volume I will be happy.

Only other thing is do I use my box that is already there or the one that came with the buttons as mine is a late 2008 version and I think the buttons I have are pre 2007 but im not 100% sure .... if so mine should be more up to date than the box that came with them... or am I wrong ?

Just an update on the fitting of the MF steering buttons... all went well with no bangs from the airbag or anything... which was nice ... As for functions I have volume + and - on the left hand side of the wheel and dash scroll through up and down on the right hand side, and mute... don't have a phone kit or highline so I think that is about it... but well happy. thanks for the info you guys have supplied... mmm what's next on the agenda...
