The dreaded 4th year service!
« on: May 15, 2012, 07:10:42 pm »
As titled my car is up for the 4th year service,I rang the stealers to ask what was involved and this is what she advised:

Major service

Cambelt replacement and water pump replaced

MOT

The grand total of £718 squids!

Luckily my DSG packed up in year 2 and was replaced under warranty so the DSG service is not needed this time round but will be next year!

My pads are the originals so maybe I'll check them first and if need be change them before it goes into the stealers.

Upon asking if she could do the work cheaper she said no but if I get a quote from elsewhere but using OEM parts and get  it done cheaper they will price match.

Well are there any good independants in the Herts area that I could get quotes.( I know I could get the indys to do the service but I still have the extended warranty with VW and want that last stamp before I use an indy) :stupid:

Get quotes from other Vag groups too, Skoda usually do it cheaper, worth firing of some emails or ringing around, other VW dealers do offers too so try different VW garages.

Never thought about trying the other member of the VAG group must give them a bell in the morning.

I tried another dealer and popped the question of a discount but the service guy said ALL VW dealers work on the same price menu.

Keep the suggestions coming lads and lasses. :happy2: :driver:

Not just me then..

Had my 4 year major service, cambelt/water pump done yesterday. Also changed fuel filter (recommended to me by peeps on here)and PCV changed over, both precautionary on my part). Told I needed new tryes for the front and pads as well. Tyres I got online from Tyre shopper and pads I'm having done by an indie. Was quoted £138 for front pads fitted by VW main dealer.

Just called Skoda for a quote, went through what I needed done and after a few minutes he came up with a price.........988 squids!

I just laughed and told him VW were only £718 but with 25% off the original quote he still couldn't match my original price.

I haven't given up yet and am sure it can be done at a more reasonable price.

All VWs do NOT work on the same price.
My local VW wanted over £400 for a first service, which was ONLY engine oil and filter.

I then had a leaflet through the door for MJ Warner, who are a VW place in Buntingford. Same job for £100 - they are a VW so all original stuff etc.
Even though it's a good 30-45 min drive to get to them, I still save - and it's down some nice country roads as well

I went back for my second service as well. They continue to beat all other VW's on price. When I ask why they are cheaper they say they simply use standard pricing and add on labour. Many other places inflate their prices, which they shouldn't be doing. Apparently MJ Warner get quite a few people drive from London, all the way out to them because of the savings.

Do a quick search for their number and give them a ring. Never know your luck, and they are pretty friendly.

S**t a brick, that's an UNBELIEVABLE amount for an oil change/minor service!! My local VW main Stealers charged me £259 for Major service (with all that entails) which is part of a "Service Plan" as they call it. Have a look at this from VW main website:-

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/fixed-price-servicing

Minor service is £139. Should be able to get that price, at worst!

I even left it a few days and rang back a second time just to make sure, in case the guy had been feeding me crap, but same price again. Couldn't believe it.

Ah, well hopefully they will call you back and try to lower the offer for the business. It's only a small place but they are usually pretty eager to get as much business as they can, being in a small village. It's almost like they are in the middle of nowhere!
Only bad thing is I got a bloody VW Fox as a curtesy car, and it drove really crap! Lol
