@ Jamie:

My Mk5 GTI was 7 years old with nearly 100,000 miles when repaired free and it wasn't a problem.

VW will either repair or replace the wings - it's up to their assessment of the degree of rust.
Mine is 7 years old with 130k on the clock. If one dealer fobs you off, go to another!!

I have VW FSH up to 72k then it was done somewhere else but stamped. Then we did our last minor service (so no stamp). Its at 85k now.

Is it unlikely they will do the wings now? Should I even bother going to get them to look?

Thanks

Yes they'll do it. My first mk5 had only ever seen a dealer once. It's a designed flaw so service history doesn't come into it and don't be bullied into being told otherwise.
Both my mk5's have sparse, never mind full, dealer history and have been done
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Of course you should try, all that stuff shouldn't matter. The only problem would be if you had had any damage or paint repairs in the wing area in the past.

Just a note to withdraw my previous recommendation of Chelmsford VW Bodyshop....

Previously I prised them for hurrying through my wing / boot warranty repair and I paid £700 to have the bonnet and bumper re painted at the same time. The finished job looked excellent.

In January (4 months after the work was done) Lacquer started peeling off the main part of the bumper. The repaired this but the bumper was not the same colour. Then last week lacquer started peeling off the lower splitter.

Its booked back in for March 11th and they are doing the whole front end again.

Not great.

sorry to hear that jedi,
tornado red seems a right bugger to colour match, just don't park it under streat lights at night  :sad1:
last time your car was in, it sat in their carpark from sat til tuesday morning, before it moved!!  i take it they have cctv (i work nearby, not storking you honest)
my bumpers are a different shade so i think previous owner had something repaired.

Yeah I left it for the week while I was away skiing.

When they first did it I checked it closely under street lights and indoors under various lighting conditions and the colour match between the wing and the door was pretty damn good... which is why I believe they can (if they do it properly) get the bumper the same match ..... But TBH I think theyare doing the whole front end again as there is obviously a problem with the lacquer.

All you lucky VW owners.
My wife's mk1 seat Leon suffers the same problem and in exactly the same place and the same cause as indicated in the VW bulletin.
Anyway Seat won't do naff all any excuse not to help the customer.
According to Seat not so good customer care they say VW only done it as a goodwill gesture and Set are not willing to do anything.
Lesson to self never buy a Seat again and to buy products with good aftercare

I tried my VW dealer last week... Got the ole "oh I've never seen that before" crap... then told me my best bet was to go to the VW body shop (30 miles away).  Really not helpful, and you could tell that they've had the issue MANY times before, because after a few mins of discussion, he told me what causes it :rolleye:

I phoned the bodyshop, and they said to go to your local dealer.... sigh...

I'm tempted to grab a wing off ebay and get it painted, fit it myself, probably circa £80 all in.

Get in touch with VW UK. If you stir things up it's surprising how quickly they can change their mind!

I didn't but it has been known for dealers to do it this way
