Bit of an update. I got a call from VW Chelmsford on Weds and VW have agreed to the works. The chap said that they have to follow VW guidelines and try to repair firs but if that doesn't work it will be new wings.

The car is booked in from Fri 27th July (earliest he could do was the 16th but the other date works better for me). I will also get a basic 1.2 Polo as courtesy car but they can't do the insurance so I will need to contact my insurer for temp cover.

Also he is gonna do the bits I need colour coding and poss have the bonnet blown over to get rid of stone chips

Can i ask who you dealt with? I might try to see them next week.
how much are they charging for the other work?

Chelmsford isnt far from me and I could go and see them... but I have a long list of other paintwork bits I want doing too... including painting the bonnet and front bumper.

I only asked for a rough price at the time as he hasn't seen the parts and we was mainly wanting to get the warranty side of things sorted. Roughly £300 for skirts, R32 lower valance and votex lip and £250 for bonnet and then VAT on top but they are only rough prices and where they have the car in already he could sort something out so will know definite prices at the end of July

The blokes card is round the OH's so will send it over later. I think his name was Chris and he is the bodyshop manager, but I will find out later and send the details to you.  :happy2:

Just passing on what my dealer told me. They were very helpful, and explained it was a well known problem by VW. They said water and dirt gets into the gap between the lining and the arch, creating an abrasive paste that wears away at the arch and causes rust. They said normal moisture wouldn't affect the metal because it is fully galvanized, which is why they are confident enough to give such a long rust warranty. Again, i'm just passing on what they said, how accurate that is I wouldn't know.

....I think that what your dealer has told you is also a very valid reason for rust starting.

A friend with a Mk4 R32 recently found plants growing in his wheel arches and he regularly cleans his car.

Hi all,

Our 05 GTI has rust bubbles on both wings, would it be possible for one of you nice chaps to send me the PDF. My wife (who owns the car), actually works for the RAC, on the VAG section of customer service, so does speak regualrly to dealers, but is off now on maternity leave. Any recommendations for dealers in the West Midlands?

Just noticed couple of bubbles on wheel arch OSF going to Leicester VW next week to see what VW will do about it had quite a few Cars from them over the years although this is not one of them (Hurdys & RagingKileak old Edition 30) Will let you know the outcome

Ask for Lee in the bodyshop he will sort you out no problem. Be prepared for a wait as he told me to phone him the beginning of July to get booked in as they are busy at the moment.

Thanks for that popping in next week, as there've been altering the showroom thought I’d leave it until they'd finished

How long does it normally take for the warranty people to confirm they'll do the work? It's been 2 weeks now and I haven't heard any more...  :sad1:

.
It seems I'm an exception (people will do anything to get rid of RedRobin!) because my VW dealership confirmed in 2 days and the job was completed (appointment at my convenience) the following week. They also prep'd and painted my new PU splitter at the same time.

I can vouch for the plants growing, I took the front arch liners out of mine at the weekend and you can see in the photo how much mud and leaves were trapped behind the liner down the bottom near the sill! (another area people are having rust problems with)

I checked out the inside of my wings and the area where all the mud had collected (06 plate) and there's no sign of any rust  :happy2:

Good idea to do this yearly!  What surprised me was the passenger side had hardly any mud trapped atall.
