Advice on a Tuned GTI
« on: June 09, 2012, 01:39:57 pm »
I've found a rather nice GTI for sale on PH and wondered:
1) was the owner on here
2) if this is a good buy
3) What needs doing to it
4) what to look for on it

Check out the speck, it's had alot done, but after speaking to my local VW specialist, it might need a couple of things doing as it sounds like the engines at its limit.

Your help is appreciated :)

I'm sure there is someone on here pushing almost 400bhp with the standard engine,
I'd change the cam to a later revision if it still has the A

Im away to go stage 2 approx 260bhp and won't be taking it any further as I don't fancy having to replace the engine

Im sure there will be a few folk on here that's at 300bhp and will have plenty of advise

Does it have service history? Think the dsg oil should of been changed twice by now and the Cambelt should of been replaced

I think I know this car! Belongs to a guy called Jason who I haven't seen for a while. I think he's also got a Lotus.

^ Pity I masked his plate! But vented OSIR carbon bonnet, Milltek quads, Quaife diff = too much similarity.

Ray West did some mods to his car too. It's well looked after and I know he'll be sad to sell it. If I still have his phone number I'll give him a call later.

Just because a car is modified it doesn't mean it's been badly thrashed and not maintained properly. we hung out together quite a bit but he never got hooked into the forums - Too busy working in his own business.

I've just seen that the owner selling is named Paul White. So Jason must have sold it to him. Jason was the first owner.

Thanks Red, and I spoke to the new owner Paul who runs a race business and seems like a decent bloke who knows about his cars.
It's got some decent spec so I'm quite tempted :D

Do you want me to ask Jason anything for you? [assuming I can find him]

For a while, Jason and I were 'copying' each other's mods and we drove each other's cars occasionally too.

he has k04 turbo which is the one on s3, ed 30 etc and the map is very conservative I would say hence 300 bhp only for this set up. It could be safely run to 340ish bhp but some peeps here running 360 ish with this set up.

I am not sure if the VW dealer you spoke to knows what's talking about regarding loads to be done as car at its limits as it certainly is not!

Great car for the money and love the mods! Go for it would be my advice!

:jumping: me and the other half went to look at this on tuesday afternoon. nice bloke, very informative. Took us both out for a drive  :driver: ...just wow. Having seen what a golf gti can achieve in modified form is TOTALLY different to reading about it on the forum..if that makes sense. It did need some love and attention, a bit too much required from the wifes POV.

Well thanks for the input guys, but it's sold this afternoon to someone from Manchester. I thought I had a long drive!

he has k04 turbo which is the one on s3, ed 30 etc and the map is very conservative I would say hence 300 bhp only for this set up. It could be safely run to 340ish bhp but some peeps here running 360 ish with this set up.

Paul

It wasn't a dealer, but a vw tuning specialist and I was only going by what was on the advert, but thanks anyway Paul. If I got a standard gti it's good to know I can work a lot into the car
