Noisy wastegate
« on: June 17, 2012, 10:17:11 am »
Hi chaps,

I've noticed the wastegate/dump valve has become much more noisy in the last week or so. Even under mild engine/turbo power when you change gear, you can hear it far more than normal.

I think it could be a split pipe or a seal going? Is it a common issue or best just to take it somewhere to be looked at? I have a major service due in about a month so was hoping to wait until then so VW can look at it, but any info before hand would be great.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Looking online, it seems a common issue. Unless anyone can think of anything else, I think I may just buy the latest revision and get a local indy to swap it out. I gather the later revisions were an improvement over the older ones (slightly different design).

Yup the D revision is superior to the earlier diaphragm ones.

Had it changed today, only £24 labour from an indy which was cheap. Much better now - quieter and boost is strong like it used to be. Looking at the old one, it seems like it wasn't torn but the bit that goes in had some play in it / seems to move more than the new one, so sounds like it wasn't opening/closing the valve correctly.

Thank you

To add, I've had both types, G valve sounds nicer with the CAI in terms of whooshes

D although seemed to be better at top boost, made the rev range not as smooth, and gave me horrendous Emmisions issues at MOT test .
Also made my idle speed with my Dsg car very lurchy, when releasing the brake upon pull off.

I certainly wouldn't use the D again.
