« on: August 01, 2012, 09:54:47 am »
Hi all,

I've recently naught a mk5 golf Gti and I was thinking about doing an oil change,
but im not to sure what oil to use.

I have tried to search on google but with no luck, I think it may be castrol 5w 30 fully synthetic?
Please let me know what would the best to use.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

I use castrol edge 5w30. Not everyone here uses 5w30 but I think most do.

You'll need 4.6 litres - Castrol Edge stupidly comes in 4 litre containers, but meets VW's latest oil spec for your engine. Cheapest place to buy it seems to be Eurocarparts. Motul and Fuchs also do good stuff - ask in the motor factors which is correct for your car. Don't put cheap oil in your turbocharged engine.

You'll also need a new oil filter (part no: 06D115562) and will need a 36mm socket to get the housing off.

Also a new sump plug & washer (part no: N90813202).

Make sure the car is ABSOLUTELY SAFE before you go under it. It'll kill you if it drops on you.

Sorry if I'm sounding nannyish, but I don't know how experienced you are!

Here's a DIY guide:

www.golfmkv.net/blog/archives/8#

It's best to change the oil when it's still warm from running the engine - wear gloves & glasses when you're emptying the filter oil.

When you've done it you'll feel great and happy that you know it's been done properly with the right oil. Enjoy!

PS: Don't overfill the sump either, it can damage something - I think the catalyst, but not sure.

Thanks for the replays guys.

I have done it before on my Lupo Gti but I just wanted to make sure I put the right oil in.

Thanks again.

Just a quick update.
I done a cam belt kit change inc water pump and the noise has stopped.

However my car struggles to start every now and then, this may be unrelated to the cam belt but I thought I would ask.

It mostly happens on cold mornings, does anyone know what it could be?

I’ll try to get a video tomorrow morning.

Thanks,
Josh.
