Pressed metal square number plates?
« on: August 06, 2012, 07:24:14 pm »
Thinking of changing to a US rear bumper with shortened number plate recess.

Anyone know if the square number plates on the rear are legal?

Also, anyone know where I can find pressed metal ones? Prefably uk road legal?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that pressed metal plates are NOT road legal in the UK (unless it's the old black and silver type) as they aren't made of a retroreflective material.

This thread might shed some light on to it...

There's no reason why you can't have pressed metal plates. Just the surface has to be reflective.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

The dubmeister pressed plates are road legal but not sure if they do square ones. Maybe give them a call :happy2:

I bought a set from an Irish company eireplates.ie

They do reflective coatings in UK spec. Look much better than plastic. I think they were around £22 delivered.

I was told there was a place in Germany that dubmeister used, but obv not any more.
Halfords do the plastic ones, about £14.
May give a metal one a go myself now. :happy2:

I bought a set of Dubmeister plates a couple of years back.  I reckon they set the car off a right (with my ABT Wolfsburg surrounds too).  Got loads of Police round where I live and never had a problem with them.  In fact, when I was parked up once, PC Plod asked me where I got them from as he wanted some for his Golf too.

According to my MOT-tester mate, the square plates will be perfectly legal providing they have the reflective coating and are stamped with the BS number.  There must be somewhere in the internet world that can sort you out!
