Airbag Light Issue.
« on: September 01, 2012, 09:54:18 pm »
Hi All

I went over a speed bump last week at well under 1MPH as the bump always catches my car somehow and 2 seconds later my airbag light illuminated and the dash displayed "Airbag Fault".

I had a friend perform a scan and the error was:

01217 - Side Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N199)              001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

I've checked both seats and all wiring seems to be intact and plugged in but the light just wont turn off.

Is this a common issue, any easy solutions or is it a dealer jobbie?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks.

if your car is 2004 - late 2006
and probably a 3dr then it is a common issue

cut the plugs off an solder the wires

I have an 04 5dr and this used to happen all the time (cattle grids are the worst offenders!!) The wiring loom is too short and any jolt will set the light off. As stated before, cut the plugs and solder the wires.

Thanks for the responses guys, It is a 3dr and 2006 which seems to fit the criteria.

Is it an easy job to do, anyone had to do it before?

See http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2815467

Fixed my airbag igniter fault, easy to do but you'll need the airbag fault cleared afterwards.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

it is fairly easy, but you need a soldering iron, heat shrink and tape

Where abouts are you located? There might be someone near to you who can do it as VW will probably charge a small fortune

I'm based in Northampton, I'd be willing to pay someone local if they know what they're doing!

Anybody interested in assisting a man in need?

I've looked in to this a little more and may give it a go myself but I've heard horror stories occur when an airbag is involved!  :fighting:

You have nothing to worry about as long as you disconnect the battery and ensure you don't connect the wires the wrong way round.
