Sat nav retrofit - 57 Ed30

Hey guys,

I realize this has been discussed many times before but I cant find a post about this particular version and unfortunately need to ask some stupid questions before I commit to buying!

I'm looking at buying and fitting a RNS 510 MFD3 HDD unit off eBay its firmware version A (part number 1T0 035 680 A) comes with GPS antenna. Says it was manufactured in 2008 some i'm guessing its not a MK6 unit. Could anyone help me with what I need to get it fitted? Theres talk of a certain can bus module, but I dont fully understand what that is enough to commit to purchasing, incase I cant get it to fit. Should I be looking at a different version rather than A?

Thanks for any help!

IMO try to get as late a version as possible. The H version is just being replaced by the J one.

Aso read this thread  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,53205.0.html

I believe you Cant work the mdi from the A version ! Aslong as you get a B or later you should be fine though just make sure you get the part numbers from the unit as some sellers will say its a B version and its really just an A with upgraded filmware.

My last 57 plate eddy was a late one and i had no battery drain issues, ive yet to fit my RNS to my new eddy which is an earlier 57 plate so we will see how i get on with this one

Also, you may need an aerial adapter for the AM and FM. VW will charge you £30+ odd for one but they can be bought off ebay for less than half that, something like this  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RNS510-MFD3-radio-antenna-adapter-VW-SEAT-RCD510-310-/280615460252?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item4155fc1d9c

I upgraded from RCD500 to RCD510 last year and the improvement was quite noticable. Good Lucks! :jumpmove:

re: MDI & RNS 510 'A' model

I have an 'A' in my '57 Edition 30, (1T0 035 680 A) upgraded firmware and maps with 7 digit postcode search courtesy of vRSCarl's fantastic write-ups here and I can say the MDI unit I fitted works perfectly with iPod, iPhone or a hardrive with MP3's.  I'm sure the later models are whizzier and brighter but the RNS510 is a great bit of kit in any guise.
Good luck!

I used this aerial adapter as I have the non swivel antenna/aerial connectors on my 06 car. The part number is 4E0 035 608 K
