Edition 30 smoking on boost
« on: September 12, 2012, 11:56:33 am »
My 07 edition 30 has started to smoke on boost. The strange thing is, it doesn't really smoke in 1st and 2nd gear, but other gears on WOT it does. No smoke on start up either or at idle. I've recently changed the PCV valve to the latest revision, and also the oil and filter using castrol 5w30 FST fully synthetic. Doesnt really seem to be using oil either.
Looking in the rear view mirror, the smoke looks black rather than blue, which makes me think maybe it's overfueling? The car has done 54000 miles and has always been warmed up and cooled down properly.
It's running the spec below in my sig

Any ideas?
Ash

Sounds like it is overfuelling. I'd get it dyno'd and see what the AFR looks like  :happy2:

What revision diverter valve are you running.Reason i ask is mine was doing the same and seemed to stop after taking of the revision D & going back to my revision C valve. Ive also switched from Tesco Momentum to Vpower for the time being.

I've recently replaced the diverter valve with the latest revision g i believe. My car has never been ran on anything other than v power. It may be a coincedence but it seems to be smoking now I've changed the oil? It's not overfilled either. Maybe the turbo is on it's way out?

I think your find that most remapped TFSi cars will blow out black smoke as there will always be set richer.. I wouldn't worry unless it is indeed blue smoke or your having performance issues.

The car runs absolutely perfect, just a bit concerned as it never used to smoke

Or is it you never noticed??..is it every time you plant the throttle, or just the 1st initial foot down from when you've been pottering around?.

Every time I put my foot down hard. Most noticeable in high rpms in high gears.

As steve says they all smoke to some extent... Mine was smoking black when booting it, and i was getting very black tail pipes and clumps of soot on the boot, though since having new plugs/fuel filter/oil change and the Revo tweaked from F7 to F8(which is leaner) it hasn't been smoking so much, tail pipe don't blacken as quick and just a fine dusting over the boot... You are always going to get some as it's a high powered turbo application and always better to have it set a little rich than too lean... no poke without smoke ;)

Jim at JKM says its normally... I was pulling no faults, burns no oil, probably put in 1/2 a litre in between services(approx 8000miles) and it's pulling strong...

I wouldn't worry about it, it's just alarming you've noticed it, i was the same...

Cheers for the replies! This is definately 100% not always smoked on boost which is why I'm worried and thinking its maybe turbo related? Any thoughts?

A richer mixture is likely to be safer for the car by lowering combustion temperatures and since its remapped it will be running hotter. Mine also emits black smoke occasionally (Stage 1 and pre cat delete only) as well and not always at WOT when accelerating.

Before my new sparks, I could puff nice clouds of black smoke on WOT if I hadnt given it a blast for a while (its stage 2)

Like I say though, it definately hasn't always done it! It's something that has recently started. It can't just suddenly start running rich, I mean a map can't just change?
I'm going to remove the plugs later and check them. Hopefully they won't be oiled up.
I'm sure it's started happening since I changed the oil and filter with Castrol Edge FST 5w30 or make just a coincidence?

My map failed spectacularly after a battery blip and I had massive running problems

Id say thats a coincidence - to be sure, you have checked the oil level etc?

Ok, so this afternoon I removed the downpipe from the turbo, and checked for play, and there was none. No sign of oil on the exhaust side either, just black and sooty. Then I removed the jubilee clip from the intercooler hose in the passengers side and there seems to be a fair bit of oil in there which dripped out.
Checked plugs, seem to be the right colour and not oiled up.
It seems that the pcv valve is letting oil down into the intake manifold which I'm sure may be the cause, but the pcv is new!
I may try a catch tank to eliminate the problem. Checked oil too and it has hardly used any at all, still on max level.
