How far do we want to take this argument.

I recall the vln racers, and the tts beating the rwd BMW's.

I do agree on track in good hands the 135i will be much quicker, but most drivers are average. And if learning how to drive is high up your list, do go karting, much cheaper, alot more fun, f1 rivalling g-forces also in the race spec karts. Can't beat it for pound per fun ratio.

I appreciate sporty golfs are expensive especially with options, but last time I was in the BMW dealership their cars are even pricier. 320d 34k, so I'd imagine a 135i well specced must be in the 40k range.

At the end of the day, both cars take a very different approach, but I wouldnt be able to say that one is better than the other. They are just different.

As for the image/badge argument, I think that's silly, as BMW's, vw's and Audi's are common as muck.

If we start that discussion, Porsche will trump em all.

It's not really an argument, just quashing some myths. They are as you say very different.

VLN is the maddest form of racing, anything and everything in about 20 different classes. Cars, budgets, drivers, track knowledge, blind luck... It's a bit of a stab in the dark saying what's quick and what's not.

A 135i with pro-nav and some trinkets is £33k -10% if you ask nicely. Leather, xenons, Brembos etc etc standard. Weirdly a 335i will stiff you for about £45k with similar spec. It's an odd world.
Sideways yo!

Damn didn't know there was such a premium between the 1 series and 3 series! The 1 series is priced pretty well then.

So to conclude drive both, see what you prefer, then buy a rs3 or BMW 1m :D

.
On the question of Mk6 R vs Mk7 GTI, it's not always advisable to buy a new car until it has been on the roads for over a year and reached its usual (Volkswagen) annual revisions of July. there are nearly always issues to be sorted out. Similar to computer software - Never buy a dot zero version until updates are available.

Personally I think that the Mk6 R is far better than any of the other Mk6's and, subject to seeing one, I think I prefer the design of the Mk7 to the Mk6. The carbon version Mk7 GTI won't appear until 2014 if all the rumours are to be believed, and I bet it won't be cheap!

I agree with Robin.

Apart from new cars having teething issues, if you are wanting to modify the car there will be at least a year to two before anything significant is out for them. Even a remap will be a while away as the security will also be next gen. I went for the .:R for these exact reasons. The .:R has taken its initial £10k+ depreciation, but is new enough to be worth me getting, yet the car's engine is now known to be very strong and easy to tune. Most of the weaknesses have been ironed out and the technology is easily manipulated.

The MKVII GTI is still around a year away ( plus the usual 12-16 weeks wait for delivery) and then ECU mods are probably another 6-12 months away after that.
Golf R gone.

I really like the 135i but I would only have one if I could have a GTI too.

I'm into VAG cars, always will be, always have been.

From air cooled to water cooled.

The plan for me is to keep the ed30 and get something else later, 135i maybe?

Its the brand for me and the whole 'GTI' ethos.
