£754 for 60k service from dealers- is this a reasonable price?
« on: September 18, 2012, 05:28:33 pm »
Hi folks, I have just enquired at the dealers how much a 60k service would be and they have quoted me £754. This price includes timing belt/tensioner, water pump and the service including labour.

Is this a fair price? Thanks for input.

When I had my Cambelt/pump service done (3-4 months back) i was charged £499 but that included Aircon service and Brake fluid service but NOT the engine oil service (had that done in January for £249), If your paying them £754 tell them you want the brake fluid and aircon services for free if your "Bundling" they will discount, just tell them what you want to pay!, If I had done all at same time it would have been £748.

On the premise that VW charge £250 for a major service, that price is still high, tell them u cant afford all that and im sure they will lower it! Either that or use a reputable Independent Specialist and ive no doubt u cud get all that for £250-300 less!

The price is from a dealer based in Edinburgh. Any recommendations for garages up this way?

My friend said the danger with going to a private garage is that they may not use VW parts or might not even change the timing belt if the old one still looks ok. Not really sure what to do to be honest.

Sorry pal, don't know the Edinburgh area. You might find an Indy who specialises in VW or German cars... Can only ask if they use genuine parts or even buy the parts yourself, and ask them to fit?

Statllers in Sheffield (well recommended VW specialist): cam belt, water pump, tensioners, coolant & engine mount bolts (should be replaced with cam belt) for a grand total of £300 fitted.  :notworthy:

Well worth a 2hr drive through the peak district  :driver:

Personnally I would use the main dealer or a VW specialised that's been recommended to you, but that's just me. Must be some Indy specialised around your area that peeps on here can recommend you. Post a seperate thread asking just that.

Paid a fair bit for my 4 year service inc. Camebelt/Waterpump! If your car is a petrol then get them to change the fuel filter as well while there at it.

PRICES FROM VW WEBSITE

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/fixed-price-servicing

Major service £279
Camebelt etc £479

Try and get them to do a package including

Brake fluid change £59
Fuel filter change £55
Air con refresh £29

I would want all that lot doing for £750 TBH, you can but ask!   :happy2:

JKM just did a 60k service on mine £259, and cambelt water pump shouldn't be more than £399, maybe less, so there's £100 saving right there...

Rutherfords Seat in earlston. 20 min drive out of Edinburgh. Vag parts used warranty friendly. Absolutely top service.

Call and ask for Brian they were £100 cheaper for a basic service over western for the edition 30. I've used them for years.

Book in for a Saturday morning and you can have breakfast in he cafe next door while they do the service. Failing that they own the petrol station so you can pickup a courtesy car the night before and return it up till 21:00 the night after.
