Handbrake button rattle
« on: September 20, 2012, 10:16:57 am »
Due to the fanstastic road surfaces we have here in the UK, the button on my handbrake rattles like hell. I find myself driving with my arm on the armrest and one finger on the button just to stop it. Does anyone know if this part can be dismantled and also may have a drawing? Would like to try and get it sorted because its driving me nuts.

Cheers

I wouldn't be worried as it's Golf so must rattle or if not now it will rattle eventually!

I was concerned with all the rattles I had before but now with tuned car it's so much rattles going on I would have to stop driving and just work in the garage all the time to have it all sorted!

.... So true!

Rattles, squeaks, chirps, who cares when you are enjoying some enthusiastic driving, which for me is most of the time I drive my 103k miler. Your brain very quickly dials them out of your focus amongst the sounds of exhaust music and the air intake etc.

But having said that, I do appreciate that we are all different and some folks care very much about having a quiet ride.

I've never heard of a handbrake rattle before though.

As you've said they are characteristics of the Golf. The others the car as I can zone out from. It's just the buzzing button grates on me with it being right under my ear.

I would like to say that I like to listen to the nice noises the car makes. Most of the time it's just a diesel clatter lol.

.
If you can't dismantle it, although surely it can be dismantled, then I guess the expense of a new one would solve it.

Do you depress the button before operating the handbrake? - Most people don't and it stresses it as you hear that ratchet sound.

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that the handle pulls off but not sure what it will leave. Yeah I always press the button in when operating the handbrake. It literally is just the chrome bit that rattles.

Sorry, I meant keep the handbrake button depressed while you let the lever all the way down. And the same when lifting the lever up to apply the handbrake. Which doesn't help you solve your problem.

I have this too... only rattle on the car... also find myself driving along with my thumb on the button...

I'm thinking the only way is sound deadening the exhaust tunnel and under the handbrake surround, to deaden vibration... which is what i'll be doing at the end of the month...
