Thanks guys..

Not sure what im after tbh

Im based in Ireland and the problems I have are the GTI's for sale over here are basically poverty spec.
No chance of a decent ED 30 coming to market.
Our vehicle registration tax (VRT) really punishes you for adding extras to your car.
Buying from the UK at the moment is not an option due to exchange rates and then the dreaded VRT when we get the car back.

So im left with the option of an Irish R32. But Im trying to find out about stndard equipment, options what to look out for before I go viewing.

Im worried about running costs though.
MPG's, servicing, Road tax for a 08 model is around €1600 per annum!!  :scared:
Service intervals, cam belt changes(does it have one?)
Recalls etc etc..
Basically wwhat this site is to the gti, im looking for the equivelent for the R32.

I'll pop over and check out the site above.

Thanks again  :happy2:

I was in the same boat as Dublin based.... Road tax is a killer and the only justification for 1500 euro + road tax for me would be great performance car likes m3, rs4 ect. I would never pay that road tax for r32 as you can get the same performance or better from remapped gti / ed30.... Unless you turbo r32 but then big money...

Also note that if eddie from 2008 you are looking at 1k road tax as emission based system was implemneted from 2008 reg cars so look for one prior to 2008 reg date as thanks to old rules you are looking at 600 ish euros road tax....

Whichever you choose all are great cars!

Best of luck in the search

Hi Paul,

Yeah the tax is nuts alright..
I cant find an eddie over here though and there is nothing really else out there thats 2.0 that interests me.

As for the pre 2008 eddie, I want a dsg so the emissions fall just under the threshold for the higher tax rate..
Gift!!
As roy keane would say :))

Would you not be better off just buying a basic spec one then upgrading it yourself with parts from eBay.de?

At least with the German site you will be paying in euros and no import tax on parts from within the EU

There are lots of guides on here for retrofitting parts

Agree 100%, it is far more important to buy a car on condition than extras fitted. Then it is just a matter of browsing the forums and ebay Europe-wide to pick up the bits you want as there are always a plentiful supply of decent upgrades. All it requires is a bit of patience and legwork.

RE: €1600 road tax.. The dont justify it.. They just make it so :)

As for buying a Irish spec gti and upgrading it.. Not a chance. I wouldnt do any of the retro fit work myself. So you are talking about the cost of the parts, and then the fitting. The time off the road due to fitting etc etc..

Ive only seen one IRISH Gti with the two zone climate control  and Im set on having that.. Cant imagine what a retro fit would cost.
I also want the ed 30 upgraded engine and turbo, not going to retro fit..
Really the list goes on..
So not an option for me
