make GTI AWD?
« on: October 10, 2012, 12:10:10 pm »
Hi,

I am thinking about making my car awd, 400bhp though fwd+ diff is still rather silly :driver:

I already have a s3 gearbox and rear diff what else would you need and would it be possible? ( is there enough space?)

Cheers

i would think you would need a whole new floor plan and a haladex system out of the r32 ? Alot of work i would imagine , and at quite some cost

I'd imagine it would be cheaper to start with an S3 or Golf R.

There are not many examples of people AWD'ing their car because it requires basically the whole rear end to be cut out and a new floor welded, along with all the parts, paint, electrics etc.

you need to speak to vRS_Alex.

:happy2: I'm sure It can be done. I recall Simon from VagCo mentioning that he used to convert cars from 2WD to AWD all the time, along with manual to dsg conversions.

It was in a VW mag a few months ago... If anybody had any pictures of the sparewheel well of an R32 mk5 and maybe the underside of it too...
That could maybe help!  :happy2:

The R32 has it's battery in the boot, which mean's the rear floor layout must be different....

The R32 fuel tank would be a must as the rear diff etc needs to run threw that way...

Stevo at stallers seems to be the man, i read on a post a short time ago he had some spare 4wd parts  :happy2:
If it's not broke, Mod it.....

Silver is the way !

Floor plan is th same. SteveP has been looking into this and he has taken out the spare wheel section in his so it should fit no problem. He can help with the details or try KPM, who i think have been encouraging him to take the plunge.

Ask me in a dew days

The floor pan mounting points are the same, just needs the spare wheel housing removing and some mounts welding onto the tunnel for the prop.

Wiring isnt a problem.  Best bet is to buy a full rear end so you get the shafts, diff, hubs, subframe etc.

You need the haldex controller, but yes the boot is the same but stores the battery and has no well... but you might aswell move the battery at the same time ;)

Rest is bolt on stuff... been looking into this since reading about it in a VW magazine I saw at a dealer...

Mk5 Golf R anyone?  :pomppomp:
