Depends what type you open to what type of rate you get. Do one online and rates are better . Tie your money up for longer and get a better rate . Daily Mail are running a petition to get the same rate as fixed bonds , sign that for better future rates . The Financial institutions have been fiddling the rates and this may be the next PPI together with the Interest only mortgage scandal !

General rule of thumb is the longer you can lock it away for and the least access you need the higher rate you get. I locked mine away for 5 years with the halifax in april and got 4.5%. Just remember to be proactive with your savings and shift your money as soon as any bonus offers expire.

I find martin lewis on www.moneysavingexpert.com very useful for clear unbiased advise.

I wouldn't recommend locking your money away for 5 years .... 2 years max . The markets are so volatile at the moment that in 5 years interest rates could be 10% , then they could be 1% too  :innocent:

I do 1 year fix on my ISA's (what little is left after buying the Eddie last year ), I also add £250 to them monthly, I use my ISA's to save for my next car (Golf R) and to pay for the following years snowboarding and golfing holidays (2 snowboarding and 1 Golf Holidays)  :happy2:

I dont do summmer holidays, get bored lying on a beach after about 10 mins  :signLOL: :signLOL:
