How to people with DSG drive?
« on: October 13, 2012, 01:44:03 pm »
Generally my cars always in D, only use manual mode in traffic free open stretches where I can really make the most of it & enjoy it. Sports only used for flat out acceleration on straights.

Generally drive in M, D in traffic. Sometimes in Sport but not that often.

.
Always D through towns/urban and also traffic crawls, then always M as my shoulders become level with the actual NSL sign (aka GLF sign) and 'think manual'. I occasionally use S on busy multi-junction roundabouts or on slip roads joining M-ways etc.

I always use the paddle shifters (mine have extensions) when in M and never nudge the floor stick. I sometimes override D or S momentarily with the paddle shifters.

I have Cruise Control but never ever use it - It just doesn't feel right and I hate it! I don't want to accelerate without an instruction from my brain to my right foot. Equally I would hate brake-assist etc.

I wouldn't buy another car without either DSG or its equivalent - It's the best of all worlds, in my opinion.

I always just leave mine in D. Occasionally use the paddles and rarely use sport. I like using the shifter. As Robin says, I too wouldn't buy another car without DSG or similar.

Ive came from a Manual GTI to DSG edition 30 with 300bhp and do have to say the DSG helps a huge amount. Would be a lot of work in a manual car lol. Takes some getting used to DSG but I'm getting there

I think D mode is very well judged. Sport is very aggressive, sometimes even dropping down to 1st gear for slow turns lol. Guess thats a real sport mode tho...!

Do people slot into N when parked at traffic lights or Just leave in D?

I read somewhere that putting the DSG into N stops the oil circulating in the gearbox and is generally a bad thing...

....For about the first 90,000 miles I have always left it in D but have more recently started to occasionally slot into N but it depends if I know the traffic lights and that they stay red for some time. It has been discussed on the forum in the past and people have opposing views about it. I'm now at 104k miles.

Also, I never use the handbrake except when parking and even then, not in my garage (so the brake pads don't stick to the discs when they're wet).

Is slotting into N meant to have negative effects on the box? Like yourself I only slot into N when I know lights are gonna be red for a few mins

While I'm here u wouldn't have the part number for the front subframe bolt and spacer mod would u? Had a search and can't find it.... :happy2:

Am only just starting to get to know how to use the dsg gbox but like many have said use sport for slip roads etc as it feels like the throttle response is a little quicker the rest of the time it's D all the way with occasional overriding! M mode is that to the side of the D mode ie sequential?
Does anyone have spinning of the front wheels on pull off if attempting to accelerate quickly? ESP doesn't seem to override!

Think this only applies to when towing the car hence the need for a low loader.
Without traction power is nothing!

Read it somewhere in this forum. May well be incorrect.

I think what you are referring to is moving the car without the engine running, that is a no no with a DSG car.
