Fitting Car Alarm
« on: October 13, 2012, 10:22:40 pm »
My mk5 GTi doesn't have an alarm fitted. Can anyone give me any advice on how much a standard vw alarm would cost or a better non vw option?

Maybe your siren's died?

When you lock with the fob, then open drivers door with key blade (don't press buttons) and get in, do your indicators start to flash after ~15 seconds?

As above, if it's UK spec then surely it should have an alarm.

Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Maybe get someone to have a look through a diagnostics scan (VCDS) for you.

If you have some buttons at the base of the b pillar, you have an alarm, if no buttons, you just have an immobiliser. One of the buttons turn off the motion sensors and the other turns off the tow away protection, if you have these I assume you have an alarm. If no buttons, maybe an import.

Have you tested for an alarm? IIRC you lock the car with the fob, wait 30 seconds or so and unlock with the key and Roberts your dads brother, noise.

factory alarm can be added, but get a scan done first to see if you have one and it's not working

Seen you can get a canbus aftermarket alarm which will work off the existing key for around £250 and thatcham approved

The main cost of the factory alarm would be the siren and interior motion sensors

although this is a cheap option

Yes it was imported to the UK direct from the factory.  I don't think it has an alarm, no button to disable ultrasonic sensors.  To be honest the vw dealer I bought it from didnt really know much about the car, had to find a lot out for myself.

Do you think it's better to get a VW alarm or aftermarket?

Part of me wonders if an alarm is worth having, no one ever pays attention to them!
