I welcome all the free talk so its all good :)
Still feeling a bit sore about the loss of my motor, after doing a few calls around the place it would cost me more than what the body shop say to repair if I was to do it myself.

Looks like im gonna need to fight for a high settlement from the insurance company to give me a fighting chance of getting back on the road ASAP !

feel really sore for you mate, especially when you done nothing wrong
as our cars get older we all know in the back of our minds that this may happen esp with a lot of expensive mods, was the reason I tried to get one of the latest mk5 gti's so to try and get some joy from it for a few years

I think im gonna look at a GTI next, need to test drive a DSG as i've heard good things in that department.

My only requirements are 5 doors and leather , not fussy on anything else, I would love stuff like xenon's and highline. But they are not essential. Colour doesnt bother me either ! Apart from white...(sorry all candy white lovers )

yeah test the dsg, I did but was undecided, drove a sweet one then a not so sweet gear change one and it threw doubts in my head, thought I would miss the gear stick but now I have a manual I would take either one next time

Hey folks,
Been having some rather serious talks with lots of people about what to do with my car after the stuff with the L200
My insurance company have got back to me.

The market value of my car is apparently £4020....

If I wish to keep the car "as is" and then do whatever I like with it...
Market Value    £4020.00
Less Excess    £600.00
Less salvage Value   £522.60
Settlement figure   £2897.40
In addition I would be able to claim my excess back as its a "non fault" claim.
So a grand total of £3497.40 and keeping the car.

If I want to "write off" the car it would be as follows.
Market Value    £4020.00
Less Excess    £600.00
Settlement figure   £3420.00
The of course if excess is recoverable due to "non fault" I would get that back
So grand total £4020 with the car going to the great car heaven in the sky.

They have also suggest that I can find alternatives in regards to having it repaired under them and they pay the bill...but they suggested this would need to be in the region of £3000 in total.

Going forward I am going to investigate other body shops in my area as the one who the insurance sent it too are know for being a bit greedy ! Plus I don't entirely agree with there market evaluation.

Any thoughts or suggestions folks ? Can I rename my car the comeback queen / phoenix :P

Every cloud has a silver lining... but a GTI is going to be a completely different proposition financially....

have they actually told you what the repair est is ?
maybe it is not that much over the 3k ?
maybe it is way over ?
hard to decide what to do, do you want a gti over your old car ?
do you wanna throw another few grand towards your payout for a decent one ?
I know some people have refused the ins payout est and fought and won a bigger amount but it isn't to say that may work on every occasion.
I think there is a few guys on here who have worked for ins companies, maybe they will be able to advise
keep us posted dude

not being funny or anything, but how hard could it possibly be to get a decent 2nd hand Mk5 wing and door, and spray them? i honestly doubt it's £3k worth of work! even with new parts, surely it can't be that much?

I have requested the "engineers" report for a real breakdown of what needs doing and the cost they say it is....
I'll use this to call around other body shops and see what they say! I'm much in the opinion that the cost they have said so far is over the top.

Ideal world I'm looking for either repaired under insurance or a decent settlement payment !

4k is not enough to get back on the road in anything decent.
From what I've seen , mk5 GTI , 5 doors with leather seem to start around the 6-8k.

I'll try to keep you all updated ! But feel free to ignore if you wish !

Hi john, i would have thought you would have been able to get it repaired for a lot less than what you have been quoted. Dont quote me on this but i heard a rumour that places put their prices up if its an insurance job. Personally if mine had that sort of damage i would be looking at buying back and getting it repaired. :happy2:

It's wrong that they charge so much for jobs like this.  A friend just had a lad crash into the back of her mini; needed a new bumper, cluster and a number plate surround.... final bill was just under £2k!

I'd definitely be doing as your doing, get the report back and get some quotes in; bet you could half that cost.
