VW Used Car Warranty/Service, what does it really mean?
« on: November 25, 2012, 11:02:29 pm »
I bought my 58 reg GTi from a VW dealer in Portsmouth a couple of months ago.  One attraction was that it was from a dealer and it was supposedly serviced & checked before I bought it plus it's got a years warranty.

However, I'm not mega happy with the result. Initially when I drove away I thought everything was ok but over the last month I realised things weren't as I expect.

1. The windscreen had three big chips I had to pay to repair.
2. The spare tyre was flat and obviously hadn't been checked as when I lifted it out there was loads of garden rubbish under it from the previous owner.
3. The door reflector was missing from the drivers door.
4. One tyre only has about 3mm of tread on it, the others were all 6-7mm.
5. The brakes are making a scratching noise when I brake at slow speed in traffic.

Am I being unreasonable to expect a VW dealer second hand car to have had these things sorted?
Does anyone know what the VW used car scheme covers?  I find it very hard to find any meaningful documentation on it.

Thanks

if those items were abundantly clear at the point of sale then you can't really do much. i'd imagine that you looked for e.g. stone chips in the windshield prior to purchase?

for the tyres, well 3mm is still legal and so i don't see why they would replace it? they usually come with 12 months MOT so you could check the MOT report for tread depth.

missing reflector you could probably ask them to sort, and mention to them that the spare was flat as this should have been an MOT fail and sorted prior to sale.

brakes you could have them look at under warranty

Unfortunately I was pressured into making a fast decision by dealer, another couple were coming back to buy the car and I had about 5 minutes to decide.  Sure enough, 5 minutes later they turned up and got told they'd missed out.

At the time the dealer hadn't told me  it was an import, I don't think he even realised himself until I had trouble getting the reg plate recognised.

I didnt check the car out that well, I relied on the VW used car guarentee, that's really my question, does anyone know what the VW used car guarentee actually means?

have a read of this:

then call Citizens' Advice Bureau. if you were sold the car, and learned subsequently that it was an import i'd imagine the law will be on your side and you should be able to return it for a full refund.

I've read that before, it actually doesn't tell you much does it.

I expected something that said they service it, what they replace/cover and what they don't, tyres, glass etc...  it really doesn't tell you anything.

I was offered a refund when they realised the car was sourced direct from Germany, by that time I had already set my heart on it so I kept it.  I have no idea if I've paid too much for it and I'll loose out when I sell it.

if you paid the same price for it that you would expect a UK car to command, you paid too much. i would demand a significant refund to take this into account or return the car for a full refund.

I'm not wise enough on car prices to know what it really was worth.  I know they could have sold the car 5 times over as they had people all over it, but that doesn't mean it was the right price!
