What to change?
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:46:31 pm »
2006 Gti has 98k on the clock now with fvwsh just fly through mot but I was just wondering what tends to need changing or keeping an eye on at this type of mileage. I need to change the clutch as its the original one, belt and water pump done by VW at 88k and update to date on servicing etc. I am looking for problems just wanted to ask any experiences so I can keep an eye out as I love the car and have no plans to change so don't mind spending a bit to keep it tip top...

The DV, PVC, Cam follower and fuel filter if they haven't been done. I've had all mine done, the DV is a diaphragm that splits over time and you get a drop in power like mine did. The PVC I changed as a preventative measure but it can fail. Same with the Cam Follower as it can wear and cause major issues, mine was fine but have seen them with holes in. The fuel filter isn't actually a serviceable item, I had mine changed at around 66k and it was clogged up and filthy.

Great thanks, will start with the DV so maybi ask what DV do you recommend?
Can remember changing this on my old mk4 gti t after
a remap I think. Are the other bits expensive to do buying and labour wise at a garage?

With the DV I would stay OEM, I've had the rev d and rev g and the g is alot better. PCV again OEM and the latest rev is rev n iirc and its also recommended to change the gasket at the same time. Fuel filter I had done by Alex at AKS along with the cam follower.

As for prices the DV is around £35, PCV and gasket about £40, cam follower is about £30 and I can't remember about the fuel filter.

All the above can be done DIY, I've done 1 DV change and the 2nd was done by Alex purely as it was up on the ramps so it was easier. PCV is another easy DIY job. I got Alex to do the cam follower and fuel filter but again there's guides to do. Best the would be to find your local VAG specialist and ask for a quote if you don't fancy doing them. I wouldn't ask VW as they would charge a small fortune. All part numbers can be found on the site somewhere as I haven't got them to hand and am on my phone ATM.

^^^^ great advice from NODZ there. Had that lot done at JKM last month (minus the PVC which I've already changed to the Revision N).

The latest choice (or flavour of the month) as far as the Diverter Valve goes is the Revision G, the latest diaphragm version. This seems to be holding boost better than the Revision D (a piston version). I would imagine yours has a Revision C so either would be a good place to start. G is about £35 and D about £55 from the main dealer.

Revision G Part number 06F 145 710 G

Revision D Part number 06H 145 710 D

Rev D has gone up a bit, it was only £42 when I got my one but that was a year ago. But I personally think G is better of the 2

^^^^ Completely agree. I have the G and feel its better (may be the placebo effect though)

Oh and the Fuel filter costs about £22 ish and inc fitting I paid £45 from JKM but was quoted £90 by the main dealer to supply and fit.

I think the latest revision Part number is 1K0201051K

Not a pro, not even close (made me chuckle), it's just i spend far too long on the forum. Have you had your clutch checked? Could be a good place to start., might be worth taking your car along to a local VAG specialised to have a listen (and look)

I wouldn't change the clutch until it starts slipping; it's an expensive job coupled with the DMF, which you may as well do at the same time - get as much out of it as you can :)
