One for anyone with experience upgrading to Windows 8

hi guys,

as i'm a full time student again i thought i'd take advantage of getting a cheap copy of Windows 8, and buy a solid-state drive to boot it from. my question is this: am i able to upgrade my copy of Windows 7 and simultaneously move my Windows onto the SSD or am i limited to a clean install?

if i'm limited to a clean install i probably won't bother with it, unless anyone had any other suggestions?

well i hadn't looked into that part. i just remembered from my old degree that we got a discount? but if the upgrade is only £15 then probably not

With Windows you should do a clean install if moving to a SSD so that it knows to install the correct config for a SSD, i.e with a SSD windows knows not to defrag it and to cache writes to reduce wear

With an upgrade it just needs to see an installation of windows on any drive in the machine. Keep the platter drive in the machine with the ssd,  run the installation from disk/usb and install windows 8 onto the ssd. You will then have reinstall any programs and also move your data.

And btw windows 8 sucks.

haha i got the idea because one of my mates really likes it. but a few people have said it's poo now so maybe i'll give it a miss

If your not on SSD now then its worth it in a decent laptop, mine boots in around 10-12seconds I think it is - to desktop.

Been running 8 since release preview and to begin with I put on a fix to get the start menu back, I don't use that now and its alright - don't see the point in upgrading if you don't have a touchscreen really but its not all that bad.  I have the cheap upgrade (£14.99) to put on but not done it yet as I want to re-format (having come from W7 and then upgraded twice to 8 after a blue screen failure first time and then a 'repair' which was a new experience).

Don't upgrade until at least Service Pack 1 has been released and more driver support available.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother upgrading yet... 8 really is for touch more than anything... you can retrofit most of 7 back into it.

8 boots quicker than 7 imo, esp. with SSD

My old Vaio with new Vertex 4 SSD, i3 CPU boots in around 10 secs from cold; took about 20 secs on 7.

Drivers might work, doesnt mean they are fully supported without issues. Luckily, i stick to Macs, but support Windows environments. Colleague took the plunge on his own personal laptop, and is regretting it.
