I'd get either:

Golf V6 4Motion
Renaultsport Clio 182
330Ci E46

The Golf was one of my favourite cars. it was beautiful in Indigo blue with cream leather, and was quick with brilliant traction, and handled really well. V6 sounded fantastic as well. If I was buying a 2 grand motor, that would be the one for me.

Fun Golf: 2016 mk7 R DSG 3 door. Work Golf: 2015 mk7 1.4 TSI GT ACT 5 door.
Gone but not forgotten : mk2 Golf GTI 16v, mk4 Golf V6 4Motion, mk5 GTI Storm Developments Stage 1, mk5 GTI Revo Stage 1, BMW 330ci, Skoda Octavia VRS Revo Stage 2, BMW Z4 Sdrive35i.

Rob, I'd say something along the lines of a Honda Jazz. Built well, cheap to insure, no bother getting 2 child seats in, versatile folding rear seats, low running costs. It's what I got as a second runabout  :happy2:
Black 2008 5 door GTI. Leather, DSG, ipod prep, 18" Monzas. Retrofitted: Cruise, PDC, RNS510, 729 Skoda Bluetooth (thanks SteveP), MFSW buttons (thanks MortyGTTDi), Armrest & vents, covered cupholder, Highline (thanks Kalu), Polar FIS+ (thanks Richn), Reversing camera (thanks MortyGTTDi)

I'm surprised my Alfa didn't get a reaction. What a beautiful car for £2k!

That's the only thing what's putting me off it. Can't find a golf vr6 closer than 150 miles away which is to far.  Off to have a look at a BMW

I had a 330ci a few years ago and the quality and driving was very similar to a golf but with a bit of RWD fun too.

Power was very linear so it didn't feel like it was accelerating fast but I reckon it was on par with a standard k03 gti

The only reason I got rid of it was the mpg issue I was struggling to get over 25mpg taking it easy and in the low teens when driving a bit enthusiastic

Saab 9-5 HOT Aero
Volvo V70 T5 2001-
Fiat Coupe Turbo

9-5 Aero is a great car, plenty of oomph; don't expect decent handling though, it's a great cruiser... took mine to france a couple of times.
Volvo V70 T5 - had the V50 T5, again great car, great engine... pooor fuel economy though, better handling than the saab.

Never owned a Coupe Turbo, but friend did, was RAPID!  Quicker than both above (as standard)

Right so far I've narrowed down out of the suggestions to the Saab 9-5 the Honda jazz the Clio 172 and the BMW .  Some lf the others are brilliant but hard to find near
