Go easy guys...

I dont feel that the OP's author (or anyone else on this forum) should have to justify/explain themselves.....

From the OP's original post it does not seem he was actually breaking any law other than overtaking  a dawdler?

I barely needed to touch the speed limit, he was going so slowly.

....I think you should check this out: As far as I know, you are NOT allowed to overtake a moving vehicle while in a 30 or 40 mph speed restricted zone, REGARDLESS of you not exceeding that speed limit.

Either way, that's the rule I follow and I think it's safer from all points of view because I understand why it's a safer practice in built-up areas. Just be patient when driving - There's plenty of opportunity to have fun on the open road after you have left the 30/40 zone.

Not True

....Thank You for correcting me on that one, Garrard  :happy2:

Overtaking in a 30/40 two-way urban road is nonetheless something I don't do, even if the car in front is dawdling. I guess that my TVR crash experience has taught me the dangers of doing so. The words most commonly heard at the scene of an accident/incident are "I didn't see you".

....We are only calmly discussing things and I don't see anyone, including me, not going easy on the OP.

However, IMO, just because someone is a member of this forum it doesn't mean that they are automatically going to be in the right whatever they do, nor that they are beyond criticism (if it's respectful and polite) from others here. We're not a gang of crooks where loyalty to each other is of paramount importance.

Pretty sure you can overtake in a 30/40, just gotta be safe to do so. Round my way its all tractors, horse riders and cyclists so you never get anywhere quick!!

....It appears (posted by a Policeman here) that you can overtake and that I was wrong regarding the letter of the law.

I think that tractors and horse-riders are usually on the countryside roads and I rightly or wrongly assumed that the case we were discussing was in an urban environment.

Big modern tractors are bloody fast anyway and don't hang about! Around here it's more likely to be an old Dawsett farmer in his beat-up old Land-Rover with his sheepdog in the back who is dawdling.

Granted, and well put accross however  IMO I dont feel some of the posts are aimed with respect and politeness to the OP - and I do not refer to yours, despite your usual level of sarcasticness ;)

To be honest, as the original OP I didn't feel at any point that anyone was disrespectful to me on this thread. I've enjoyed the usual level debate, and have found that 99.9% (that's not statistically accurate!) of the time I've been treated with nothing but respect. When I'm in the wrong I've normally been put right in a respectful manner.

Not True

Can you expand on that Garrardrj?

Well its not written any law anywhere for starters and not in the highway code . For example you were driving along the road behind a 10mph milk float , a mobility scooter , tractor  etc . Since local Parish Councils have been allowed to set their own speed limits we have areas within Suffolk where 30mph areas are surrounded by open fields on both sides of the road and none of them are lit with street lights to deem them 30mph zoes either . Some 30mp[h zones are 3/4 miles long !

It would be intersting to hear where you might have been told what you quote and who might have told you .

....As I wrote earlier: "As far as I know.." - It's something I've been taught (would be funny if it was by Police Instructor, John Cave!) but I can't remember by whom - I've been driving for over 40 years. I also said I was ready to be corrected - Which you did  :happy2:

I think that we have two distinctly different scenarios here: One in built-up urban zones and one in the countryside zones. Countryside zones obviously (to my mind) have more flexibility.

Irrespective of the written law or Highway Code, do you not agree that it's adding to the risk of an incident if you overtake without a lot of extra care and attention in a built-up urban environment? - It's a potentially multi hazardous and dynamic situation which has, as I said previously, many unforeseen factors. Indeed, isn't it why 30 and 40 mph speed restrictions exist in the first place? Or is it solely to save the NHS money when dealing with the aftermath of urban road accidents?

....[Note to self] Man-hugs are okay in some circumstances but man-love is many steps too far [and, I hasten to add, not my scene anyway] but I'm not homophobic and years ago spent many evenings out with a gay fashion designer best mate in Chelsea and often pulled model girls as a result cos they thought 'we' were safe!
