....I think you should check this out: As far as I know, you are NOT allowed to overtake a moving vehicle while in a 30 or 40 mph speed restricted zone, REGARDLESS of you not exceeding that speed limit.
Either way, that's the rule I follow and I think it's safer from all points of view because I understand why it's a safer practice in built-up areas. Just be patient when driving - There's plenty of opportunity to have fun on the open road after you have left the 30/40 zone.
Not True
Can you expand on that Garrardrj?
Well its not written any law anywhere for starters and not in the highway code . For example you were driving along the road behind a 10mph milk float , a mobility scooter , tractor etc . Since local Parish Councils have been allowed to set their own speed limits we have areas within Suffolk where 30mph areas are surrounded by open fields on both sides of the road and none of them are lit with street lights to deem them 30mph zoes either . Some 30mp[h zones are 3/4 miles long !
It would be intersting to hear where you might have been told what you quote and who might have told you .
....As I wrote earlier: "As far as I know.." - It's something I've been taught (would be funny if it was by Police Instructor, John Cave!) but I can't remember by whom - I've been driving for over 40 years. I also said I was ready to be corrected - Which you did
I think that we have two distinctly different scenarios here: One in built-up urban zones and one in the countryside zones. Countryside zones obviously (to my mind) have more flexibility.
Irrespective of the written law or Highway Code, do you not agree that it's adding to the risk of an incident if you overtake without a lot of extra care and attention in a built-up urban environment? - It's a potentially multi hazardous and dynamic situation which has, as I said previously, many unforeseen factors. Indeed, isn't it why 30 and 40 mph speed restrictions exist in the first place? Or is it solely to save the NHS money when dealing with the aftermath of urban road accidents?
