New Washing machine not draining properly
« on: December 28, 2012, 07:24:16 pm »
New washing machine arrived this afternoon, connected it to the cold water feed and inserted the waste hose approximately 5 inches into the vertical waste pipe and did a practice wash. All was going ok until the waste water started backing up in the waste pipe. I have tried adjusting the distance the hose in waste pipe down to only 2 inches but it still over flows.

Any thoughts?

Is the waste pipe blocked?

The old washing machine was draining ok but i checked the waste trap anyway and it is completely clear.

There must be a bit of a blockage. The new machine probably drains at a higher rate which is causing the backup.

You say the trap is clear, but the standpipe must not be.

I have checked the three traps on the main waste pipe (Kitchen sink, Bath and Bath room sink) and they are surprisingly clean.

Stumped

have you checked the pump  I knpw its new but 99.99999999% of draining and blockage problems are pump related.

Ok the traps are fine, but check the wastewater pipework between the machine and the trap. Most likely to be blocked at a bend or junction.

Does your machine connect to waste via your sink waste?  If so check for a small rubber bung fitted to the end your new washers waste pipe, it may have been pushed up the pipe from when you shoved it on the under sink waste

Edit; i speed read the thread id still check for the rubber bung though

Fixed the damn thing.

Removed the four waste traps feeding into the main waste pipe, cleaned each and refitted. There was no significant buildup but they were cleaned anyway. The pipework connecting the washing machine trap to the waste pipe seemed unnecessarily complicated, it looks like at some point a dish washer had been connected after the washing machine and the pipework meaning the new machine was pumping out water faster than it could drain away. The unnecessary pipework has been removed and the washing machine trap is now connected to the waste pump by a length of 40mm pipe. Plain and simple!

Good stuff, simple is best.

We had a blockage yesterday, I had to rod a main wastewater pipe then clear a manky, deep gully trap from the kitchen wastes. Sorted it out though - it's certainly not rocket science.

Plumbers are a last resort for me as I have yet to find one that doesn't extract the piss with his prices.

I wish I had taken a before and after photo of the pipe work, god only knows what the person was think who plumbed it in.
