I've got to be honest Robin, the words VW Golf (whether GTI, R, whatever) and petrol head doesn't go together!

Do petrol heads enthuse over Golfs? Do they hell.

....Petrol heads enthuse over Golf GTI's and R's - The modded ones, and do so irrespective of what their own car is. Am I the only one who believes this to be so?

How many less members would there be on this forum if that wasn't so?

Perhaps you and I have an entirely different interpretation of who/what a "petrol head" is   :surprised:

Sorry, are we talking about the ones VW sell, or the cars that get into the hands of people on this forum? It's an important definition to make...

I'm pretty sure this conversation started with a discussion on whether artificial sound suited the demographic VW are targeting with the GTI and R.

....I agree that the definition is rather fundamental to what has been our 'debate'. I was mainly talking about the ones which VW sell with the GTI and R (and Ed30) badges. To me that badge represents a much sportier version which is worthy of the attention of a petrol head when modified. IMO.

You are right, most unfortunately in my not so humble opinion, that VW (as Hedge also said) are nowadays more interested in sales numbers and I alluded to that when I mentioned bean counters and lamented that aspect. And the fact that Volkswagen AG are happy to install artificial sound in the GTI and R's (and RS3?) is proof of that sad fact. IMO.

VW's opinion of its target market has changed very little, they still go after these people...

This is getting silly now.

The GTI is owned by thousands of petrol heads who have to live in the real world of compromise. And when it comes to compromise and all-rounders, the GTI is king.

Second hand, I completely agree.

I still bet the majority of them are bought brand new by middle england 30-something professionals - and that's why you see refinement and quality, rather than balls out petrolhead biased.

But the same goes for audi, porsche exc RS models, lamborghi, ferrari, bmw.

Having a seperate car for trackdays is such a luxury

....But don't forget this one....................

^ "It's a GTI" and this is what a GTI should do: Put a grin on your face.

That's the SPIRIT of the GTI. It's much more than just a means of transport (if you allow it to be).  :notworthy:

Exactly - a GTI to me is a fast, fun car that doesn't ride like a smacked arse and give you ringing ears.
You can park it in Knightsbridge or Kirkby without anyone batting an eyelid.
Middle England generally has kids, so this is where a luxurious hot hatch is ideal.

I honestly think VW aren't aiming GTIs at 22 year old petrol heads, and never have. The used market however is probably exactly this group.

Then of course we ruin all that by modding it  :signLOL:
