Well I certainly don't fit your demographic Ian.

I watch Top Gear because it is a damn good entertainment programme that is centred around cars. If you are after something more highbrow then you are on a hiding to nothing.

Sorry, that was a bit harsh. One shouldn't post when in a bad mood  :ashamed:.

I would however like to see more of the quality of motoring journalism to which Robin refers, as it has been sadly lacking in recent series in my opinion. I find the challenges a bit same old same old, and whilst I found them entertaining and amusing in earlier series, They haven't really moved it on. Just my opinion though, we're all different and like different things.

Apparently after Top Gear is the piece about Colin McRae, part 3 of the Stirling Moss/Jackie Stewart series.

....Damn! I missed the Jackie Stewart prog.

I am really looking forward to the Colin McRae programme. Really really enjoyed both the other 2, its such a shame that McRae (and Richard Burns) left us to soon.

The first 2 are being shown again, starting with the Stirling Moss one on BBC HD this Sunday at 21.00, sky channel 169 or Freeview 102. Patrick Stewart's enthusiasm is infectious.

I think anything regarding Colin McRae is going to be a bit controversial especially regarding the circumstances of his death.

I admired him as a driver. I even had him staring at me in the bar after the Hong Kong - Beijing Rally which he won.

TG used to be funny but it's been a bit boring. I agree it needs to change format to keep fresh.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

TG stopped being informative years ago, but I still watch it for the automotive Mr Bean comedy it is. I know some/all of the accidents are staged but Its worth watching.

That's a relief.  It's not often I disagree with you, but I was about to!

I'll add my vote to the growing concensus on here - TG can be entertaining, but with each series I hope for new ideas instead of re-hashes.  And more often than not, I'm slightly disappointed.  Fifth Gear just seems so old fashioned now by comparison.  Where are the experts who can also entertain?

Oh, and the Moss / Stewart programmes were superb, not least because they still have so much to say.  That aspect will sadly be missing from McRae's programme; I hope that the programme doesn't suffer as a result.

I'm glad top gear is coming back, I really missed one of their great adventures being on at christmas (my all time favourite is the south america 4x4 special). For me top gear works when the 3 presenters interact with each other on the adventures or challenges doing the things we can't afford, or have the time or privilege to do. I except that it has been slightly tired of late and hope that it will return to its former glory. I love the cheap car challenges, the big races and of course the great adventures, when they get it right it is one of the few things on tv that genuinely makes me laugh.

Perfect escapism for a sunday night before the start of yet another working week!!

I think if you want to see some middle+ aged men having a laugh with some cars then its your you, if you prefer more serious journalism then maybe watch VBH/Needell and the gang, personally I love top gear, although I tend to find half of the "Stars in a reasonably priced car" to be a boring and sometimes I do fast forward through that  :signLOL:
