oil tdi 2.0 140 odd?
« on: January 21, 2013, 02:30:58 pm »
Hi everyone,

im in a bit of a mystery, either im being stupid or something isnt right. Basically i have checked my oil the correct way, stone cold, level service ect.

on the dip stick it is showing way over the max line. My car was only serviced the end of september. So i thought i need to drain it out and put the correct amount in.

So thats what I done, i drained the oil out until there was barely anything coming out of the sump. Topped it up with 3.5 litres of oil (required 3.8 with oil filter change) and change the oil filter. thought this would be the problem solved.

I have given the engine a run to get the oil around the system then let the oil seep down into the sump for an accurate reading... and hey presto its still over the max line?! (but not as much as it was by.)

This may sound stupid but i have checked the dip stick to see if it is correct for mycar and it is.

can anyone shed any light on this matter please?

I find this model engine (BKD)dipstick is very difficult to read since its a diesel, even just after an oil change as the oil is black and the comparison is black plastic.
Check it several times to be sure but if it's definitely wrong I would think it along these lines:-
If the oil level goes up (uncontaminated with water) it is either a leaking injector or a tandem pump issue and I would suspect the latter.

i agree, i find this design of dip stick difficult to read. Have to leave it to settle down for a day, wipe it re-check. It seems to take a while after top-up, for the oil to run past the dip stick into the sump.

Thanks a lot for your reply. This dipstick has got to be the worst design in the world. The oil level has remained the same from Saturday which is when I done the oil change. I shall bear the things you said in mind.

The only thing I can think of is if all the oil didn't drain out?

I take it that I would be able to see if the oil was contaminated with oil? As the oil just looks black with no noticable change.

Thanks

Maybe I should give this ago and leave it's for a day. But the level is staying the same and there is generally a distinctive line.

Cheers for your reply

I'd be looking at the oil to see if there is any contaminates.

The tandem pump can leak and mix oil with the diesel.

Is it even worth risking driving the car at this given moment? Il check the oil tomorrow, can it be checked just by taking the oil cap off and peering inside?

If there is fuel in the oil will this dent my wallet? Sounds like a rather serious issue.

Cheers for all the help with this
