Mk2 Leon Cupra to Mk5 gti
« on: January 24, 2013, 07:09:48 pm »
Im looking to sell my mk2 cupra (was 340hp stage 2 now back to standard) and looking to buy a mk5 golf gti. What are things to look out for etc. And are the build quality that much better in a golf? Cheers :happy2:

If you want similar power then as you probably know it's the K04 Ed.30 you will be after.  I doubt there will be much difference in build quality, perhaps a slight adv. to the Golf... the centre console is a nicer area in the Golf if I remember the Seat.  Other than being a strange move... I'm sure you'll have all the same experiences with teh Golf as the Leon... same engine, brakes, exhast etc.  I'm sure I will be corrected....

My bro-in-law has a Cupra R & my wife has an Altea - the SEAT's definitely lack in the cabin compared to the VW.

Retrfitting a glovebox light was a mod in the Altea

You'll miss the bigger brakes coming from a Cupra. Hardware wise, it's pretty much the same.

One thing you want to look out for in older GTI's is wing rust - look for bubbling in the dead centre of the lip of the front wings. This is my second mk5 to get a warranty repair over this.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

I would say so as I recently made exactly that decision, if you intend on doing performance mods especially.

Ed30 and GTI have the same 312mm/286mm brake setup which is smaller than the Cupra fronts.

The R32 has pretty much the same 345mm fronts, and 310mm vented rears - the Cupra is 286mm solid rears?

Ed30 has red stitching on interior trim, half leathers, tinted rear lights etc - been covered a million times if you have a search. Like many VAG cars it usually depends what options were ticked from new.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.

I have done this change! Didnt quite like the Leon that much and I wanted DSG. Sure Leon has more power (well mostly noticeable when speeds are illegal), but I love the Golf a lot more for its interior, looks etc and even handling.
