Front arches have rust :( help
« on: January 27, 2013, 08:56:09 am »
Just washed the car and the front arches have rust bubbles forming   :sad1:

Ive done a search on here but only 2011 threads come up!

How do I go about tackling VW about this?

Always thought mine was rust free :(

Cheers guys

take it to the dealers and if its got good service history then it should get done under warranty

When did it need a good service history??

They will take a paint thickness gauge a see if any work has been done previously. If not new wings regardless of service history.

I should know this, but how many years paint warranty do the 2006 models have?  iirc it's 6 years, in which case I'm a bit gutted as I've seen some bubbling on the offside arch this morning. :sad1:

It's a misconception that it is done under warranty, it's actually done as a "goodwill gesture" by VW UK.

Take it to the dealers as most know about it by now, they will take pics and paint depths and send it off to VW UK. Takes roughly 3 weeks and you'll have an answer. Usually it's either 70/30 (you pay the 30%) or totally free

Rust warranty is actually 12 years, although, as said above it's always called a goodwill gesture repair on the arches because it is not body perforation. A good dealer service history will actually help at some dealers because otherwise they might say that the car has been neglected and wriggle out of it that way.

I had a Focus MK1 that had problems with the arches bubbling too... not again!  Having had the wheel arch lining of both off, at one stage or another, they are very similar in the way that they rub the arch itself; is this the issue here?

When i got mine done he took a reading of the paint depth and he said that it had definetly been repaired before , dodnt have to show any service history and i got a new wing for free and a courtesy car!

No it's the foam on the inside of the arch. It holds moisture and basically rots it from the inside out

Think it's a combination of the foam and rubbing. My dealer told me it was due to dirt and water getting in between the arch and the lining causing an abrasive paste that rubbed away at the arch. Others have been told it's the foam. Down to poor design whatever the reason!

I have had two mk5's in the last year get this fixed for free with no arguing necessary - if the first dealer is no help, go to a second one.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)
