There aren't any screws on the GTI engine cover

Have you tried running the engine for one minute to warm the rubber mounts?

I also fine it easier to start on one corner and work my way around.

check out here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3598.0 where others have had the same issue

where whiteGTI gave the following sage advise
or you can review  >> Removing engine cover GUIDE

Quote from: whiteGTI
Top right, pull upwards and towards the front of the car.
Then bottom right
Then bottom left
Then top left.
To be honest, after the top right is done, the rest come off so easily.
Try using a hair dryer and angle it underneath the cover - to heat the rubber grommits so that they enable the cover to come off easier.
Don't be afraid to break the cover, you do have to give it some force.

warm the car up and yank  :happy2: , use the force........
grommets will either stay attached to the car or stay with the filter housing, when you want to put it back on ALL the 4 grommets need to be back on the filter. Id also put some rubber friendly grease or other on the inside of the grommets so it slips on easily

good luck

Be careful as I've managed to break one of the retaining lug things on the engine cover. Not problematic but there's no way I'm gonna change the airfilter on that thing ever again.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
