Why get a catch can?

FSI engine after 19k miles!!!!!! :scared: :surprised:

Dread to think what mine look like now with 43K on  :scared:

Probably a like "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" by me putting the BSH can on last week  :fighting2:

Mines done same as u steve milage wise so should I worry  :scared: or do I just get the can put on ? Might get vwr to have a look at mine when I am down next

My engine will be swapped for a low mileage one in the next month or so, which means it'll get a good fettle and a catch can system fitted. :happy2:

No probs, you have another PM about the catch can's too  :happy2:

So what your saying is we should all go big turbo so we can swap the engine and know we have a nice clean set of valves  :laugh: :laugh:

Think i will be joining you guys in this mod. Looks quite bad at the valves. This would end up showing signs of poor compression would it not?

Yeh, PippyRips has had some interesting times with his RS4. I know him from Scoobynet too (we seem to follow each other around from Scoobs, to Audi - but I crept off to you guys now!!!)


I'd read about his FSi findings before - quite shocking to be honest. All I can say is that at the moment, thank god for warranty.
2yrs time I might be looking at a catch can....

In a nutshell, some oil vapour gets recirculated through your oem pcv back to the inlet valve port. Some of these vapours settle on the intake valves and, over time, the crud you see in the above pic builds up.

What a "normal recirculating" catch can does is condense most of these vapours and store them within the can itself thereby reducing the amount of vapour reaching your inlet valves.

The race type catch can goes one step further by venting any vapour to atmosphere so no vapour reaches the inlet valves. Whilst this sounds ideal vs the "normal recirculating" catch can, you will most likely fail your MOT emission test plus you may also get an oily smell in the car with a light oil coating in your engine bay with it installed.
