Hey guys,

Just had my Golf GTI mk5 remapped by R-tech to stage-1. I have to say the results were absolutely fantastic and the guys there are such a good bunch!

So when Nick was doing the health check on my car he noticed that when I had the middle and back box of my exhaust changed, the company had used a smaller pipe than the original, which is restricting the car slightly.

He mentioned getting a Milltek system. However after looking at the price of these I don't think I could afford one of them soon.
I could however get a second hand standard GTI exhaust. Would there be a massive difference in the car if I held off for a while and got the Milltek or at stage 1 would a standard exhaust do just the same job?

Cheers

Craigh

Standard exhaust is plenty good enough for stage 1. Afaik you can even go stage 2 with it, although a Milltek would free up the power better.

You could knock out the precat in the gti exhaust - might help a bit, although some people complain about extra noise-do a search for 'precat delete'.

I recently went from standard to a full milltek turboback non res with decat and the difference is immediate.. Its much more raspy and as you rev higher has a lovely deep tone to it and it sounds better the more miles you put on it.. Im on a stage one but the car feels quicker since adding the exhaust too

Do you find the exhaust drony (is that a word?) when cruising? It's one of the mods I'd like to do when I find the right car...

I also have a turbo-back system (Custom front half inc. 200 cell cat, Milltek from cat-back) and don't find it drony when cruising below 90mph 70mph

Almost as quiet as the OEM system when maintaining a steady speed but a nice warm burble when booting it!

When you get above 85-90 yes it does drone a bit but doesn't bother me! At cruising speeds its just like standard but when you go above 5k rpm its a diff animal altogether.. And the twin tail pipes just look better fit nicely into the gap more snug!

What's the fitting like for a Turbo Back system? I looked into one for my S4 and it involved dropping the subframe and would end up almost as expensive in Labour as the exhaust itself :scared: I guess Cat Back is pretty straight forward

I am definately thinking of knocking out the pre cat.

When I'm looking at these exhausts it is mentioning cat back. What is this? This all sounds quite complicated lol

May be worth buying a used OEM exhaust off the forum / ebay to remove the restriction.

I'd advise using the Search function when choosing aftermarket. I went to the ring in a Non-Res Milltek R32 and it droned so much i was nearly deaf by the time I got there

Put me off wanting a milltek, i would have been more inclined to go for BCS as its cheaper and customer service seems very good - i'm very much in support of "the little guys" on here  :happy2:

You can remove the turbo-back no problem, I even took my standard one off using axle stands!

The custom kit was later fitted on ramps

If your running a turbo back milltek system is it not a pain in the ass to revert back to the standard system for MOT?

I was under the impression that the cat back part did next to nothing and it was mainly the downpipe that needed to be changed for stage 2. Surely the OP could get standard cat back but change the downpipe and cat for a 200 cell version?
