service due list of "stealer suggestions" what to do?

I have a mk 5 ed 30

It went in recently for new coil packs and when it was in they mentioned a few tihings that I said I would leave till the service is due

"Noted from the last time you came into us is the following:
 
Front brake pads 90% worn - £139
Rear brake pads 90 % or 1mm worn - £139
Front Right tyre 2.0 mm
Brake fluid service due - £59
Discs front and rear lipped - £358.25"

So worn pads, how do I verify? I have calipers and micrometer any way I can check?

Front tyre is BS, nothing wrong with it plenty of tread all across tyre face!

Brake fluid, fine I will change.

Disks, what thickness should they be and can I get a micrometer on to them without taking things off?

I believe you can get the disks skimmed while on the car at around £40 corner

I wouldn't just skim discs.. discs get lipped because they are worn 

Normally the mechanics who work in VW dealers get bonuses for any work booked in as a result of what they find, EG if they find a damaged CV boot and the customer then re-books the car in with the garage they get a % of that work.
Especially when you go in for free work they try to take you for a ride, I think most garages are like that, not  just VW

Bearing in mind my car is what it is, all sticked up with owners clubs and what not on the rear window, I took the car to Ridgeway VW to get the Radio code, they charged me a tenner "we have to send it off to Germany.. "
no love it's an automated system it takes 10 minutes

Anyway, they were like

"we can't find the service book in your car" - because it's at home in a safe place with my documents and spare key.
"there's no evidence of a cambelt change" - it was done 25k ago (at the time) the belt looks almost new..
"also there's an electrical fault with your headlight that needs investigating" - no you turned the car on with the headlights on.. my HIDs don't like to be on when you start the car, if you do, the drivers side one will go out, until you turn the headlights off and then back on again manually (whether to the on or auto position) - they said they needed to remove the headlight and said it would be £140 investigation!!!

Needless to say I didn't go back. They just try to take you for a bit of a ride, wouldn't take it personally.

Holy sh*t, they don't half take the piss with the disc and pad prices.

The brake fluid change isn't that badly priced, ask them if they do the ABS purge as part of that (they are meant to, but i bet most don't).

indeed but at what thickness do they need replacing? Should I not measure the thickness of the disks with a vernier?

You can do matey, the standard disc thickness is 30mm 25mm, thanks Tortaruga .
I think you can generally tell when the disc is foobarred by the amount of lip.  Also, worth nothing that a worn disc is going to chew up a new pad more quickly than a new disc would.
With the Euro CP 35% off you can get them sorted for a whole lot less than you've been quoted.

I've only had to replace brake disks and pads once on my old car which was a BMW 120d and the prices I got from the dealers make this look like peanuts! Disks and pads for the rear from a BMW dealer were £478 fitted. Obviously I went than independent specialist and saved a fortune.

IMO, I wouldn't take any mk5 golf to the dealers now, even the newest ones are around 5 years old so are well out of warranty and all your doing is pouring money down the drain taking it to them. Full vw service history counts for nothing IMO. I'd much prefer independent specialists working on my car.

The dealer will pick up and drop off the car which saves me a fair bit of time hence using them for basic servicing.

You are probably right though I should look elsewhere now the car is as old as it is. I really can't afford time off work to drop the car off and pick it up so are there any independent specialists in north london that will do that?

The lip looks minimal to me, the pads are fine other than one side at the rear.

I had fun with VW which ultimately resulted in an out of court settlement for me. Poor workmanship and generally poor service aka 'saying things that either don't need doing or just plain funny when they describe the issue.

Case in point is my air con. They helpfully didn't bolt my fmic back on late last year and the air con pipe has rubbed when the fmic has moved around, creating a nice hole in the pipe. VW did a 'service' in January and pointed out that my air con didn't work, and that it would require further investigation to find out the cause. Hmmmm, I wonder what it could be!! Naturally they wanted £ for it. Alex in Bedford went X, Y and Z, there's your problem. Nice and simple. As it happens i'm not too fussed about but hey!
