Howdy amigos
« on: August 06, 2009, 08:38:04 pm »
Just got my first GTI black 5 dr DSG and it is fantastic :jumpmove: been reading the site for a few days so i thought id best say hello.

Got a few questions if people wouldnt mind answering them for me.

1) Im thinking of dropping the girl and not too sure by how much. I dont want to drop it too low as i still want to be practical, how low should i go!

2) Im thinking about changing my alloy wheels but i when i see all this offset stuff it goes straight over my head "if you have a offset of____ it will not fit because it will be too small and if you have an offset of ____ it will not fit because it is too big the sizes you will need will be between____ smallest and ____ biggest." ( could someone try and fill in the blanks) :fighting2:. The alloy wheel size im after would be 18s.

any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

will post some pics when  i get the opportunity too

Welcome Dazzer. :happy2:

If you have your eye on a set of wheels post up the size and we can easy tell you if they will fit.  :happy2:
And if you just want a nice drop then you probably would be just looking at springs, not to expensive in the grand scheme of things but make it look the shizzle.

Welcome Daz

Standard size 18" alloys are 7.5j x 18 and 51 offset

The offset is generally determined by the width of the alloy and the overall gap between the arch and the inner suspension.

The lower the offset - the more the alloy will stick out towards the arch
The higher the offset  - the more the alloy will be pushed inwards toward the suspension .

If you go for an aftermarket wheel at 18" it would generally be 8" wide and have a 45 offset.
You can go wider, but you would probably need to do archwork or camber adjustment.

Also remember that the lower you go the more likelyhood there is that you will rub

a 30mm drop should be about right with an 8" wide alloy with a 45 offset. Some people will put 10mm spacers in the rear as there is slightly more room at the back :happy2:
