Which Big Turbo - Any Ideas

I currently have my Mk5 GTi with Ko4 conversions, s3 injectors and twintercooler as well as uprated fuel pump etc etc. The problem is I want more power. I am based in the Northwest and dont mind if I have to import the kit just want the best one.

I have been looking at various kits like ATP, Diblas but just dont know which way to go. I want to do the install my self but just cant decide which turbo will be best and if there is anything I should watch out for.

have you considered WMI and a custom map?

You can have 400bhp &450lb ft torque with the above setup and keep the drivability of the K04  :happy2:

I have AEM with mine. You ideally want a progressive controller (stage2) as it feeds the w/m gradually.

You can notice the difference with abit more timing added (Revo)

are you getting your engine rebuilt then?  you must have a bwa/axx  the max is around 380.

Your need new rods so fact that into your budget :drinking:

400bhp is more than enough for FWD also :happy2:



I would buy mods like LSD WMI Good brakes shock setup.   what is your current setup?

Hi, I've already had the rods and pistons uprated as I knew I would eventually want the big turbo so when they changed the vvt chain I got them to do it then. Just want more power really. Suppose as you get use to the power the more you want.

I can vouch for how quick James is. Spinning the fronts in 4th in the dry. Mental  :driver:

The problem with big turbo is you lose lots of low down power and if caught out in the wrong gear, can be seriously laggy. That's why Hurdy has been put off, even with a 4WD Golf R  :surprised:

I just remember Jeremy testing that 400bhp Evo on Top Gear and getting overtaken by a 1.6 Fiat as the turbo was so laggy.

Seriously though, 380-400bhp and a flat power curve like James's would be quicker on the road than some big turbo setups. Remember it's not peak power, it's the power curve and delivery

This isnt strictly true with the newer GTx28 setups.  Having driven the APR golf extensively for a few weeks at a time with both the K04 STage 2+ and the GTx28 setup, the extra lag is not even notable.  Maybe this wouldnt have been the case if it was the older GT28 series setups, but i think the new turbos get past this.

Having driven an FQ400, i concur it is seriously laggy setup.  Even the FQ300 is a laggy engine.  The GTx28 spools so much better than those do.

But again, why would you be in the highest gear then decide im going to go WOT at 30mph!!!  Its completely irrelevant.

Having looked at his power curve id be surprised.  Its savage low down, hence why he spins his tyres in 4th in the dry.  If your able to spin your tyres in 4th the reasons are simply A- Theres too much power B - The power delivery is to aggressive C- The tyres are websters.  And this is of course in the dry.  Add some moisture on the deck and the car will become pointless, with Mr Fiat Stilo driving away in the distance.

I personally dont think its worth while going above a K04 Stage 2+ output of say 350-360hp on a FWD car.  I agree, AWD is needed or BT setups.

Jame's car looks much much more aggressive low down the rev range than the big turbo setups.  IMO I would expect a big turbo car with the reduced low down power to be more tractable.  Plus the newest revisions of the stage 3 setup fueling now has them running 450hp!!

Plus Id wager Jame's turbo with its WMI setup is working much harder and will be much more highly strung to run the 400hp he has than a GT series turbo will while achieving substantially more power purely as it wil have a lot more headroom.

I can't add anymore on the GT28, I haven't tried the APR golf.

Back to James, the 1-1 linear throttle and LSD enable you to hold it right on the limit of traction, however when 4WD conversion is done, that 4th gear WOT won't spin the wheels but will lauch it up the road. The high output is a combination of trick turbo spooling, free-flowing airflow (intake, intercooler and exhaust), and the ability to advance the timing thanks to the meth.

Bearing in mind some remaps request 100+% of what the turbo can give, it's probably no more harmful than other maps on the turbo, but only time will tell  :laugh: - James is the testbed of what a K04 can give so will have to wait and see how long components last  :happy2:

Decided on the ATP garret 3071R, now to get my hands on it, and then get it on the car and setup. Can't wait  :party:
